Oddworld: Soulstorm for PC is the next game from the platform-adventure games series that was started in 1997. It was created by Oddworld Inhabitants Inc. and the studio’s internal dev teams from California and Great Britain. Soulstorm continues the story from Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, a 2013 remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Odysee, and is loosely based on Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.

The Plot

The story in Oddworld: Soulstorm for PC is a rather dark take on the Oddworld universe and uses the same plotlines, ideas, views on consumerism and capitalism in a new way. Once again, we play as the likeable Mudokon named Abe. After the events of Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty Abe leads three hundred Mudokons, who he freed from the Glukkons’ grip. Our hero and his company are facing a dreadful situation. They have to go through a desert without any food, water, or hope. After some time, they find relief in a mysterious addicting brew.

Oddworld Game Series

A series of platform adventure games set on the titular planet, inhabited by friendly Mudokons. The series is developed by The Oddworld Inhabitants studio, with support from Digital Dialect, Saffire and Just Add Water studios. "godparents" of the Oddworld series are Lorne M. Lanning and Sherry McKenna. The first installment of the series - Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - was released in 1997 on PC and PlayStation. The game was well received by adventure fans, as evidenced by the average reviewer rating of 85/100 (according to metacritic.com). This encouraged the developers to turn the idea into a full-fledged series. The main games in the series include: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (1997), Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (1998), Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee (2001) i Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (2005). In addition, over the course of more than 23 years, the developers also prepared a number of ports for portable consoles (e.g. Oddworld Adventures) as well as remastered versions and bundles. The most important attempt to refresh the series was Abe's Oddysee New N' Tasty released in 2014. The game was a remake of the first installment from 1997. The developers managed to maintain the characteristic atmosphere of the original, while improving the mechanics, which were already a bit clumsy at the time. The most important changes were the introduction of the option to communicate with several Mudokons at the same time and the inclusion of a previously absent quick save option. The success of the game prompted the developers to make plans for remaking the sequels. As a result, in 2020, we got Oddworld: Soulstorm for PC, PS4 and PS5, loosely based on the second installment from 1998 - Abe's Exoddus. The title presents an even darker and more terrifying view of the world and is a direct sequel to New N' Tasty, both in terms of storyline and using the gameplay mechanics that were improved in it.

  • Difficulty and Frustration: Players noted that the game felt overly difficult, with long levels that could become tedious and frustrating, especially without proper save points.
  • Loss of Original Charm: Long-time fans lamented the absence of the humor and charm that characterized earlier titles, feeling that the game took itself too seriously without the quirky elements of the originals.

  • Quicksave Functionality: The absence of a quicksave feature was a significant point of contention, as players felt it detracted from the gameplay experience by forcing them to repeat long sections after failing.

Summary

  • Overall, while Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition brought some new and visually impressive elements to the series, it faced backlash from longtime fans for straying too far from the beloved mechanics and charm of the original games.
