Today, Gearbox and 2K announced the decision to move the Borderlands 4 release date up by about a week and a half. This is unusual in a time where it’s normal to see games delayed. Just look at Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, a game that was meant to launch last fall, but ended up launching last month instead. Along with the announcement of this new release date, we also know that PlayStation will be hosting a Borderlands 4 State of Play at 2:00 PM Pacific Time, 5:00 PM Eastern Time, 11:00 PM Central European Time.

Borderlands 4 release date moves up, now releases September 12th instead of 23rd

Borderlands 4 is one of the biggest games expected to be released this year, and now players will be able to play it earlier than expected. The original release date was planned for September 23rd of this year but is now planned for September 12th instead. The Borderlands social media page shared the announcement earlier today, saying “After careful consideration—along with a LOT of meetings, playtesting, and incredible development work—we have made the monumental decision to MOVE UP THE LAUNCH DATE OF BORDERLANDS 4 to SEPTEMBER 12.” The all-caps formatting was used in the original, not added by me.

The same announcement also shared news about tomorrow’s Borderlands 4-focused State of Play. The announcement reads: “…get an extended look at the action-packed insanity that awaits you on Kairos.” This is on top of the announcement from PlayStation directly, who also shared news about the State of Play on social media, saying: “Tune in for over 20 minutes of new weapons, abilities, missions, and more…” This State of Play will be the first opportunity to get a much closer, detailed look at this new Borderlands game.

This is great news for fans of the Borderlands series. But, this year, it’s hard not to speculate about why this happened. Moving a game’s release date up is not completely unheard of, but it is certainly unusual. Borderlands 4 is being published by 2K, one of three publishing labels owned by Take Two Interactive, another being Rockstar Games, the development team behind 2025’s most anticipated game, Grand Theft Auto 6. Chances are slim, but if there’s anything that could force a publisher to move a video game’s release date forward, it could be a Grand Theft Auto 6 release date. Of course, we don’t know what the release date could be, but if anyone knows it’s Rockstar and Take Two.

Borderlands 4 is going to be a huge game, and people will need time to play through it. So, this new release date of September 12th might be just the right amount of distance to give people time to finish playing Borderlands 4 before jumping into the new Grand Theft Auto. The upcoming Rockstar game is expected sometime between October and December this year, so the real question is how much time will Take Two want to put between these two major releases? On the other hand, there could be many other reasons for this change. Ultimately, I do hope that the development team at Gearbox feels good about this change. The last thing anyone wants is for Borderlands 4 to release in a less than finished state.
