Diablo 4 Companions Available Only in Campaign for Now

Diablo 4's story campaign is expected to feature companions, but not the same ones as in second and third installment. It is possible that some time after the release, also mercenaries will come to the game.

Both in Diablo II as well as in Diablo III players could use the help of companions - mercenary warriors willing to serve our cause with weapons or magic. In the second game there were many of them, and the services they offered had to be paid for. In the third game, on the other hand, it was possible to find only three - the Templar Kormac, the rogue Lyndon and the sorceress Eirene - but each of these characters had their own story background.

If you are wondering, how this issue will be resolved in Diablo IV, a partial answer comes courtesy of PCGamesN's Lauren Bergin, who asked Adam Z. Jackson - the lead class designer in the fourth installment.

“For the launch version of the game we do have some places in the story in particular where you will have certain named NPCs following you and helping you out as you figure out what Lilith is doing in the world. We don’t have anything to announce about the Diablo 2-type follower that you hire – we’re sticking it to the campaign for now. Stay tuned, we may have something in the future to announce but no promises.”

Bergin mentioned that this last sentence caused a funny reaction from one of the developers of Diablo IV, namely Ash Sweetring, who is responsible for creating the dungeons we will come to explore in the game. This could mean that Blizzard already has some plans related to companions. It is possible that they concern the endgame.

As a reminder, let me add that the release of Diablo IV is scheduled for June 6, 2023, on PC, PS4, PS5, XOne and XSX/S.
