Today, FromSoftware has finally revealed that Elden Ring Nightreign will have a two-player mode starting July 30th. From the game's launch, this has been possibly the most requested feature, perhaps only rivalling the numerous requests for crossplay. Nightreign took the FromSoftware formula in a new direction, but it also left many fans scrambling to find a third player. At launch, you could only play the game with a group of three or on your own, the latter of which would make the game much more challenging than it already is.

Elden Ring Nightreign is officially getting a two-player mode

The news was revealed in a new minute-long trailer showcasing two players traversing the Lands Between and fighting various foes. Fan sentiment is generally positive. Though one comment on the YouTube page pointed out a frightening realization: “…now me and my friend won’t be able to blame the random third player for our screw-ups…” Jokes aside, this will make the game far more accessible to a broader audience. The update is planned for next week, July 30th, so it will be interesting to see if this has a major impact on Nightreign’s player count.

Now that this highly requested update is here, fans can fully focus on their other request: crossplay. Many players agree that for a modern multiplayer game to lack the ability to play with friends on other platforms is shocking. Maybe FromSoftware will share an update in another few months, but don’t hold your breath. Adding a two-player mode is something FromSoftware can create on their own, crossplay is more complicated.

This news also comes at an interesting time for FromSoftware and its publisher Bandai Namco. Sony reportedly acquired 16 million shares of Bandai Namco recently, signing a “strategic business cooperation agreement.” This is the continuation of Sony's concerted effort to gradually increase its stake in the massively popular and successful action game developer. Fans may remember that one of FromSoftware’s titles, Bloodborne, was a PlayStation exclusive, and fans have been asking for a remaster for a while now.

Speaking of exclusives, one of the biggest surprises from the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation in April was the announcement of The Duskbloods, a multiplayer action game exclusive to Nintendo’s new console. The Bloodborne comparisons are fairly obvious. We are still waiting for more information on that game, but it’s going to be the second multiplayer title from the legendary developer, after Nightreign. I am fascinated to see what the future holds for FromSoftware.
