FromSoftware studio boasted strong sales of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and Elden Ring: Nightreign. Sony, meanwhile, announced a major investment in its partnership with Bandai Namco.
Almost 2 months ago, a cooperative spin-off of the award-winning production from FromSoftware studio, Elden Ring: Nightreign, launched on the market. Even though this action RPG attracted a lot of people when it first came out, the initial reviews weren't very positive. It was only after the developers released regular updates that the situation changed. Now, out of over 90,000 Nightreign reviews on Steam, 82% of them are positive.
However, FromSoftware studio also has another reason to be pleased, apart from these excellent player reviews. The game is selling really well. Today, the creators announced that Elden Ring: Nightreign has reached over 5 million players, and the Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, has sold 10 million copies across all platforms (PS4, PS5, XOne, XSX/S, and PC).
Within the first five days of the release, Nightreign was played by 3.5 million people. The title was the top-selling game in the United States in June, beating out games like Death Stranding 2: On The Beach and Mario Kart World (via Circana). At the end of June last year, FromSoftware announced that Shadow of the Erdtree had reached 5 million players in just about a week after the expansion's launch.
Generally, both titles do very well. For context, let's mention that Elden Ring reached around 30 million people (data from May this year).
We've got some important data about the publisher of the Elden Ring games, Bandai Namco, along with the updated sales data for FromSoftware's key titles. Sony has signed a "strategic business cooperation agreement" with them, which means that they will have some say in the content released by Bandai Namco.
Sony has bought 16 million shares of the company for about 68 billion Japanese yen, which is close to 2.5% of all company shares. It's a big investment for a Japanese company that already has a large stake in Kadokawa, which owns about 70% of FromSoftware.
Toshimoto Mitomo, Chief Strategy Officer, commented on the cooperation with Bandai Namco as follows:
Through this partnership, we aim to co-create an array of content and experiences that exceed expectations. [...] we will further accelerate our efforts to maximize IP value and realize Sony's long-term vision.
