Fan gives No Man’s Sky a retro pixel art makeover. It would make the perfect cozy space exploration game
Imagine NMS as a cozy adventure. No next-gen visuals, just nostalgic pixel art and 16-bit sounds.

I know the Worlds Part 2 update just took No Man’s Sky to a whole new level with its visual upgrades and even more planetary variety. But hear me out – what if there was an NMS with a totally different vibe? Imagine a version that feels more like a Stardew Valley-art style, something that looks like it belongs on a Game Boy Advance. Cozy, retro, and still all about space exploration. Cool idea, right? Maybe it’s not a full game and never will be, but someone actually made a fan art of NMS as an isometric pixel art game!
No Man’s Sky, but make it retro
I love quirky, fun ideas or unexpected mashups of different IPs to create something truly unique, like that Sailor Moon reimagined as a Soulslike game. This time, it’s not even a short video or a full concept art project, just a single image – but even that is enough to let your imagination run wild.
A pixel art artist posted his recent piece on r/NoManSkyTheGame subreddit, and gain everybody’s attention right away. Comments poured in straight away saying that this would be a perfect mobile version and even called it a ‘Pixel Pocket Edition’.
Just looking at the image, you can almost hear a 16- or 32-bit version of the No Man’s Sky theme playing. I can’t help but wonder: what would the mining beam sound like? For some reason, in my head, it’s either Sans’ voice from Undertale or that classic Super Mario Bros. sound when Mario slides down the flagpole. Meanwhile, the ‘Technology Recharge’ and ‘Warning! Threat Detected’ sounds should definitely stay the same, they already have that retro vibe that fits perfectly with classic game sound effects.
People are already asking the creator for more No Man’s Sky pixel art images, but if I could make a request myself, I’d love to see a tiny version of the hermit crabs, with the fanciest shell possible.
