Hideo Kojima Remembers Metal Gear Solid 2 on the Game's 20th Birthday

Yesterday marked the 20th birthday of Metal Gear Solid 2. On this occasion, the game's creator Hideo Kojima decided to reminisce a bit about this classic production and share some interesting facts.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. On the occasion of the 20th birthday of Metal Gear Solid 2 Hideo Kojima decided to share a handful of interesting facts and thoughts;
  2. This gives us an insight into what makes a developer cry, as well as the story behind a certain cigarette butt.

Metal Gear Solid 2 was released on November 13, 2001. Older players may be surprised that 20 years have passed since then. The game's creator Hideo Kojima also seemed a little surprised by this fact. He decided to share his thoughts and some interesting facts about the occasion on Twitter.

From Hideo Kojima's tweets we can find out that he is a big fan of the song titled Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday, which was included in the soundtrack of the second installment - he supposedly cries every time he hears it. Moreover, the dev was criticized for the fact that a character in MGS 2 threw away an unlit cigarette butt. Therefore, in the sequel, the protagonist steps on each cigarette he drops, and in the fourth installment he even has a portable ashtray.

The developer also recalls the protagonist of second game - Raiden. He was a young soldier, trained to kill from childhood. Kojima mentions that at the time, the boy's story caused quite a negative response. He also admits that he even commissioned a live-action film about the story of the real-life child soldier, which he edited himself, but in the end the footage didn't make it into the game because it wasn't accepted by the age-rating agency.

Despite spending many years in the industry, Hideo Kojima has no plans to retire. His latest game Death Stranding received very positive reviews and won the hearts of many players. Certainly in the future we can expect more interesting projects from the developer.
