Can alters survive and can Jan and Lena get back together? These are just some of the questions that will be answered by selected endings of The Alters. Below you will find a summary of all the main endings, involving the implants and Tabula Rasa paths, as well as the fate of the main characters: Maxwell, Lena, Lucas, Agatha and Jan Botanist. You will also learn which choices affect the ending, how to prepare for the finale, and if it's possible to see different endings within the same playthrough.

How to prepare for The Alters endings?

The first important choice that will affect the availability of endings awaits in Act 2. In the main task The Value of Life, you will find out that all alters are in mortal danger. It will be necessary to implement a plan to cure them. This will become possible either through creating and sacrificing an alter without Awareness (Tabula Rasa) or through implementing neural implants. We described this choice in great detail on a separate page: Tabula Rasa or implants?.

  1. Choosing the implant option will result in a cooperation with Lena instead of Maxwell in the game's finale (Agatha will start representing the corporation). The rebels will have a chance to return to Earth, but only if you successfully persuade them to return to the main base. There will also be an opportunity here to unlock additional endings for Jan Botanist.
  2. Choosing the Tabula Rasa path will result in a cooperation with Maxwell instead of Lena in the game's finale. Additionally, you have to consider that the rebels will have no chance of returning to Earth. This is because after leaving the base, they will remain in their hideout until the end of the game and you will not be able to persuade them to return to the base.
  1. Regardless of the chosen variant, you will have to play through most of Act 3. One of the most important steps will be climbing the Interal Tree and using the Fragmenting Device. This will unlock the possibility to activate the beacon to call the rescue team.
  2. Several new tasks will appear in your journal. It is mandatory to invent and build the Ark Sarcophagus. Apart from free slots (if necessary, remove other base modules), constructing it requires 30x Metals and 40x Rapidium.
  1. Optional preparations include plans to take over the rescue ship. To deal with the rescue team, you can use sleeping gas or explosive charges. To gain control over the ship, you will need autopilot or Lucas's help. These paths may require completing research projects, producing items in the workshop, or establishing contact with Earth.
  2. We recommend completing all possible preparations from the list. This will allow you to have access to various endings in the game's finale, after the options for conducting research, extracting resources, and using the workshop are blocked.
  1. Using the right console in the Command Center is a point of no return. That's when most mechanics will be blocked (including the passage of time). You will have the opportunity to say goodbye to the alters (and possibly discuss the action plan with them) and proceed to the proper choice of ending.

Endings associated with the implant path (Lena and Jan Botanist)

A more positive ending is guaranteed by taking over the rescue ship (betraying the corporation). You can take advantage of the preparations made before the arrival of the rescue team.

  1. The gathered rapidium will always end up in the hands of corporations and will be used for their own purposes instead of solving food problems on Earth.
  2. Alters from your base will successfully avoid detection thanks to the Ark Sarcophagus. It is also possible to save the rebel alters, but only if you manage to bring them back to the base in Act 3.
  3. Jan will be put on trial for his actions. The decision related to hijacking the rescue ship will affect the charges brought against him and the severity of the penalty imposed. A milder sentence may be influenced by the use of sleeping gas instead of explosive charges, as well as opting for Lucas's help instead of the autopilot option. Lucas himself will agree to help you only if you have a good relationship with him. His attitude will also be influenced by how many rapidium arks you've built throughout the game.
  4. Lena may appear in court and defend Jan, but the game will not provide a definitive answer about their future relationship.

Another possible path is to ignore the option of stealing the ship; you have to do nothing instead. Then the rescue operation will be taken over by the corporation with Agatha leading the way.

  1. The gathered rapidium will be seized by the corporation and the food problems on Earth will not be solved either.
  2. Jan will not be accused of anything. Not only will he not face a trial, but he will be recognized as a hero responsible for obtaining rapidium. However, Jan's relationship with Lena will fall apart.
  3. The alters that were in the base when the rescue ship arrived will be detected, although their further fate will remain a mystery. The rebels can remain hidden on a foreign planet, but only if you haven't brought them to the base.

There is also a third alternative option, but you'll need to have Jan Botanist at your base in Act 3 to achieve it. At the end of Act 3, he may present his plan to you, which is to swap places with you. The "real" Jan can then join the alters in the Ark Sarcophagus, while Jan Botanist will take over his identity and remain at the base. You can make this decision during the final farewells. While playing as Jan Botanist, two standard options will appear:

  1. Stealing the rescue ship - Jan Botanist will be put on trial, but he might also get together with Lena. The remaining alters from the Ark Sarcophagus (including the real Jan) will avoid detection, while the rapidium will remain in the hands of the corporation.
  2. Doing nothing - Jan Botanist will avoid a court trial, but the game will not reveal the further fate of the real Jan and the remaining alters from the Ark Sarcophagus. Botanist will reveal his true identity to Lena, but they will not get together. Rapidium will remain in the hands of the corporation.

Endings associated with the Tabula Rasa path (Maxwell)

The best option is to steal the rescue ship (betraying Maxwell and the rest of the corporation). In this scenario, you can rely on the preparations made before the arrival of the rescue team.

  1. Jan and his alters manage to keep the accumulated rapidium and Maxwell will not gain access to it. Maxwell can be accused and brought to court for his unethical actions.
  2. There are scenarios where you might be able to solve the food crisis on Earth or where rapidium falls into the hands of the corporation. It depends on whether you receive help from Lucas. He will want to help you only if you have a good relationship with him. His attitude will also be influenced by how many rapidium arks you've built throughout the game.
  3. Jan will be put on trial for stealing the ship and he will be at risk of serving a prison sentence. Expect bigger problems if you used autopilot and explosive charges. Lena can appear in court and defend Jan.
  4. Alters from your base will successfully avoid detection thanks to the Ark Sarcophagus. The alters from the rebel base will always remain on the foreign planet and you cannot take them with you.

The alternative path involves refraining from taking over the rescue ship and deciding to do nothing. Maxwell will take over the rescue operation.

  1. Jan will gain a new identity and become an employee of a new corporation founded by Maxwell. The gathered rapidium will fall into Maxwell's hands and the food problem on Earth will not be solved.
  2. The fate of the alters from your base will remain unclear, although it can be assumed that they will be held by Maxwell. The alters from the rebel base will always remain on the foreign planet and will not be captured.
  3. Lucas will break off contact with Jan and in this ending, Lena will not appear at all.
