The Alters: How to complete the Saving Ben task?

Saving Ben from death in an accident is one of the optional tasks in The Alters and it is directly related to Jan Refiner. This part of the guide informs how to find out about Ben from the Refiner, how to extract information about Ben's condition, and how to persuade Lena to save Ben's life.

Who is Ben?

1. Ben is Jan Rafiner's ex-boyfriend - these men were in a relationship on the life path that was created for this alter. In the reality where "the main Jan" lives, they are not a couple, but you can make efforts to learn more about Ben and prevent his death in an accident that occurred in Jan Refiner's "past".
2. The first step is to unlock the task Sound Mind in a Sound Body, which is assigned by Jan Refiner. Remember that you must have him among the created alters. You will be asked to build a gym module in the base (70 metals and 70 minerals). After performing this action, wait for Jan Refiner to appear in the gym room (the above picture) - it may take some time.
3. Talk to Jan Refiner again, and he should open up about his past relationship with Ben. He will also be interested in the fate of Ben in the reality of the "main" Jan.

How to obtain and pass on information about Ben?

1. You will receive a mission objective to ask Lucas about Ben. You can do this in the communication room (wait a bit if the conversation option is unavailable at the moment).
2. After presenting the situation, you have to wait until Lucas calls back. You will find out that Ben is still alive and get a choice here - keeping this information to yourself or passing the news to Jan Refiner. Only the second option will allow you to continue the story of Jan Refiner and Ben. You will also unlock the Optimism lesson.

How to complete the Saving Ben quest?

1. The next steps will be unlocked at the earliest in act 3 and only if you previously chose the implant variant (instead of the tabula rasa variant). If you chose the implants, you will not lose the ability to continue communicating with Jan Refiner (after he becomes one of the rebels).
2. After the implants are deactivated and the rebels are convinced to return to the base, you need to talk to Jan Refiner again. He will want to protect this world's Ben from the same fate that befell "his" Ben. You will receive Saving Ben optional task.
3. Lena can help you save Ben, but only if your relationship is still positive and she wants to continue contacting the main protagonist. You can convince Lena about Jan Refiner's plan with special dialogue options related to mastered lessons (e.g. Pragmatism), thanks to which he will make a phone call and prevent the accident. If the conversation with Lena ended with her refusing, then load the previous save and lead the conversation differently or wait for new lessons to be unlocked.
