Remakes and remasters (yup, it's not the same, guys!) rarely make their way to such summaries, as at the end of the year we prefer to reward new titles rather than old chestnuts, regardless of their quality. But rarely do we see remasters delivered like Resident Evil 2, which is basically a completely new game and shares only a handful of general ideas or characters with the original.

Capcom has decided to approach the topic of refreshing its iconic survival horror very thoroughly, starting with a change in how it is played in general. The static camera and sluggish controls, more fitting for a tank than a living creature, were thrown into the trash; in their place we got a camera placed behind the protagonists' backs and modern controls - including FPS-like shooting mechanics.

Despite all these facilitations, the terrifying atmosphere of the original was successfully preserved. Ammo is hard to get by in the zombie-infested Raccoon City, and the undead quickly soak up the few bullets we have before they finally fall. The plot, despite being based on rather simple formula, is engaging, and the visuals have more than a fair share of stunning moments. Not to mention Mr. X, whose tenacity and loud steps can follow us for a long time after we finish playing... If only every developer would make such remakes, we wouldn't need new games.
