An action sandbox game developed by Sucker Punch, the creators of the InFamous series. The player is taken to the titular island of Tshishima, where as a samurai he or she fights the Mongol invaders in order to avenge the death of family and close ones. A direct confrontation isn’t always the best course of action. To effectively eliminate opponents, the protagonist must learn to work in the shadows. During the journey the protagonist will visit various locations – from bamboo forests to mystic temples.

A third-person action game developed by Team Ninja studio (known from titles like Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden) under the supervision of Koei Tecmo company. We play as a samurai fighting against various enemies, among which we will find both humans and monsters. We cut our way through the enemies not only with conventional weaponry, but also with special abilities of our hero and the magical power enchanted in his sword. Gameplay is a mix of games like Onimusha and Dark Souls. This means that the difficulty level is high and it forces the player to make use of different tactics, dodges, blocking and powerful, complex combos. Interestingly, game has been announced as early as 2005 and was supposed to be one of the launching titles for PlayStation 3. However, due to a few complications, the developed has been postponed, and the final game will make it now to next generation of consoles.

Seventh main installment in the popular series of strategic games and the sequel to Shogun: Total War. Once again, the action takes place in the 16th century in feudal Japan. You take control of one of the clans and begin making efforts to be honored with the privilege of ruling the whole country as the new shogun. To accomplish that goal you need to manage diplomacy, military operations and economical development of your territories. Almost every aspect of game mechanics has changed since Shogun: Total War’s release (except of the basic foundations of the gameplay). Brand new AI algorithms made battles more realistic than ever. Statistics of generals and units are improving with player’s progress. Naval combat and multi-stage sieges have been added, and weather conditions have greater impact on battles than before. Main story campaign can be played in either single- or multiplayer mode (in cooperation with or against other player).

A standalone expansion for Total War: SHOGUN 2 strategy game and a part of the Total War series by Creative Assembly. The add-on offers a new campaign set in the Empire of Japan in times of the civil war between the Emperor’s supporters and the last shogunate. The player can side with either faction, each of which is represented by six families. At the same time, it is a conflict between the traditional Japanese samurai culture and the modern firearms-based army. Technological advancement of our faction and the available units are largely dependent on our relations with overseas superpowers. Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Fall Of The Samurai offers an expanded campaign map, railway transportation, additional units and agents, and a new kind of battle: port siege. The introduction of firearms, especially the Gatling gun, is also a great innovation. Apart from the aforementioned campaign, the expansion comes with 4 historical battles and an updated multiplayer mode.

Another installment in the series of action games about the samurai. The series started in 2002 and has been developed ever since by the Japanese studio Acquire. The story in Way of the Samurai 4 is much more expanded in comparison to its predecessors. The game takes place in Japan in 1855 where an internal conflict takes place between the traditionalists and the advocates of technological development and cooperation with other countries. The player assumes the role of a wandering samurai whose looks and traits can be adjusted to fit the player’s preference and playstyle. At the beginning of the game the protagonist travels to a fictional city Amiham where he must join one of the sides of the conflict. The choice will determine how the rest of the story develops. The gameplay is similar to the previous installments of Way of the Samurai. It’s a dynamic action game filled with impressive battles. During the game player uses samurai weapons - including the traditional katana. The game offers a variety of attacks and battle skills. Interactive cut scenes enrich the game and make it more interesting.

An epic strategy game developed by Creative Assembly (a British developer) and taking the player to 16th-century Japan. As the head of a noble family, the player develops their province in order to widen one's area of influence in the country ruined by war. Gameplay was divided into two segments here, combining elements of a turn-based strategy with real-time battles. Thus the player works on their province through construction of new buildings, trading, maintaining diplomatic relations, raising successors and training an army of loyal samurai. Simultaneously however, the player takes part in epic battles in full 3D; what is noticeable, thousands of units can be engaging in the battle at one time. The game comes with a large portion of authenticity when it comes to recreating historical realities. The in-game battles are extensive when it comes to different mechanics implemented - those real-time skirmishes get affected by such factors as the player's commands, formations, morale, fatigue, shape of terrain, weather or fortifications.

One of the installments in action games series developed by Acquire studio. The story takes place in feudal Japan, in the Gishu Amana province, where a fierce battle between the rivaling clans takes place. The player assumes the role of a samurai and chooses his side in the conflict. It is worth mentioning that each path has a different ending. The basic of the gameplay is combat. The enemies can be defeated by using many types of melee weapon. One can also create his own weapon by using parts found during the game. The impressive duels are waged during story missions that are sometimes supplemented with minigames. It is also possible to form a team with a mercenary who will help us in combat in exchange for completing a mission for him or sharing a house. Way of the Samurai 3 offers clean, but not very impressive three-dimensional graphics.

A turn-based RPG created by Dead Mage Studio. Tale of Ronin features a story set in Japan’s feudal period. As the title suggests, player assumes the role of a ronin, i.e. a masterless samurai, who gets a chance to improve his lot. To make that happen, however, he must embark on a dangerous journey and experience both good and bad sides of the turbulent period of history, such as friendship, betrayal, war and honor. The protagonist starts his journey as a lone traveler, but in time he may be joined by two other companions. Together they visit various locations, make difficult decisions and, most of all, fight with enemies encountered on the way. The most interesting feature in Tale of Ronin is the so-called Sekai System, which is a kind of permadeath mechanic. If the protagonist gets killed in battle or commits seppuku to reclaim lost honor, the player becomes another ronin. In such case, however, you don’t have to start completely from scratch. Instead, you visit a world shaped by the actions of your previous hero.

We follow his story from birth, through the trainings that prepare him to combat, to the civil war and death during the siege of Osaka. Among the improvements created by the developers there is a selection of game modes – the adventure starts in the “castle city”, a base from which we can not only select playing mode but also participate in various side activities. The main mode of the game is a historical war campaign during which the player has freedom to select tactics and optional objectives. What’s new are the “Long-term Battles” – fights that take many hours and have a day and night cycle. Samurai Warriors: Sanada Maru has high quality graphics provided by the engine created for the fourth main installment of the series.
