Cyberpunk 2077 Looks Bad on Metacritic

We're observing the player ratings of Cyberpunk 2077. The game is doing badly on Metacritic, especially on consoles. But it's average is improving on Steam.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • CP2077 has poor user ratings on Metacritic;
  • The console editions are getting cut to ribbons;
  • The game gets better and better scores from players on Steam and GOG.com.

The first industry media reviews of Cyberpunk 2077 appeared a few days before its release. They concerned only the PC version of the game and their average score was 91% on Metacritic (at the time of writing this news, it dropped slightly - to 90%). Now the players, who have already spent a lot of time with the game, took the floor so it's worth to check how the title is rated by the users.

In this respect, Cyberpunk 2077 is doing poorly on Metacritic. The PC edition is still doing relatively well, as the average user rating is 6.2/10, but the console editions look much worse. On PS4 this is currently a tragic 2.5/10, and the Xbox One edition fares slightly better at 3.2/10.

Negative reaction of console players is caused by the game's poor technical condition on the PS4 and Xbox One. They complain about numerous errors and disappointing performance. For the time being, only a few reviews of these editions published by the industry media are available online, but these are also not good. JeuxVideo rated the console editions at 7/20, or 35%. For comparison, the game's PC edition was rated at 17/20, or 85%.

What is interesting, however, is that the reception of the title among PC players in digital distribution websites is becoming increasingly positive. Shortly after its release on Steam, 71% of Cyberpunk 2077 ratings were positive, while now it is 79%. On GOG.com, on the other hand, the average user ratings increased from 3.7/5 to 3.8/5.

The game's problems do not prevent it from achieving impressive popularity. Cyberpunk 2077 broke Steam's all-time activity record for a single player game on the day of release, exceeding the threshold of a million players at the same time. Yesterdat was almost as successful and at its hottest point , 981,000 people played CP2077. Most games are achieving their best results on weekends, so the game will probably set new records soon.

It is worth mentioning that Cyberpunk 2077 has scored the most successful launch in the history of PC games. PC edition sales in pre-orders alone reached 4.72 million copies. The previous record holder was the World of Warcraft expansion Shadowlands, where pre-orders plus launch results totalled 3.7 million copies. This expansion was released on November 23, which means that Blizzard Entertainment's game enjoyed the leading position for only a few weeks.

Bonuses regardless of reviews.

Finally, we should mention interesting reports from Bloomberg. According to Bloomberg, there were changes in the mechanism of awarding bonuses to CD Projekt RED employees.

Initially, developers were to receive bonuses if Cyberpunk 2077 achieved very high reviews. However, the management decided to change these guidelines and the bonuses will be granted regardless of the game's final result on Metacritic.
