Subsequent DC Games Won't Follow in Marvel's Footsteps

DC superhero games and movies are to be combined into a single universe. This was confirmed by James Gunn, as the president of DC Studios.

James Gunn - as of late one of the heads of DC Studios - has confirmed that the next games starring DC Comics superheroes will be closely linked to the publisher's movie universe. Thus, Superman, Batman, etc. will not follow in the footsteps of, among others, the Spider-Man game series from Insomniac Games, which lives "its own life."

Director of Guardians of the Galaxy dispelled doubts on the matter in a post on Twitter. The discussion began with a question about the connection between the DC Universe movies and the series that would expand their stories, which Gunn confirmed.

The quick response encouraged other Internet users to ask the filmmaker about other issues, such as the possibility of him directing more productions, as well as animations or series unrelated to the DCU. In both cases, Gunn confirmed, and did the same in a comment under a post whose author asked about games set in the DC movie universe.

Unfortunately, the co-president of DC Studios (the other being Peter Safran) didn't reveal anything more. Twitter users, on the other hand, had a lot to say about it in the comments. Some Internet users don't like the idea of fans having to "buy a dozen video games" to learn about the canon events. Some people point out the long development time of video games or express concerns about the quality of these projects.

Nonetheless, it falls to note that this new strategy probably does not include games that have been in development for a long time. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was originally scheduled to debut later this year, and the delay for 2023 is unlikely to be due to an attempt to fit the project into the DCU canon. The same goes for the unannounced game from WB Games Montreal.
