GTA 5 Dethrones LoL as Most-watched Video Game

Thanks to RP mods, Grand Theft Auto 5 has climbed to number one on the list of most-watched games on streaming services this year.

Grand Theft Auto V will be celebrating its eighth birthday in a few months, but the game remains to be very popular. Nothing illustrates this better than the fact that GTA 5 is the most watched game of 2021 in the streaming category.

The information comes from analytics firm Stream Hatchet. It published a report summarizing streaming results for the first quarter of this year. The breakdown of the most popular games summed up data from Twitch, Facebook Gaming and YouTube Gaming. It shows that in the first three months of 2021, viewers watched 536.4 million hours of GTA 5 streams. Thus, Rockstar's game managed to dethrone League of Legends, which was the leader in 2020.

The main source of this success are the RP mods (primarily FiveM) for Grand Theft Auto Online, which enable us to play the lives of ordinary residents of Los Santos. The NoPixel server in particular is leading the way. It enjoyed crazy popularity in 2019, but then its star dimmed a bit. For the past few months, however, it has been experiencing a renaissance.

The viewership of RP servers (apart from NoPixel, also MafiaCity, Eclipse and New Hanover are very popular) is driven by the participation of popular streamers. This year, such celebrities as shroud, Valkyrae, and xQc have been regularly broadcasting. Celebrities from other industries have also joined the fun, including basketball players LeBron James and Kevin Durant, rapper Travis Scott and actor Chandler Riggs.
