Sony Wants to Sell 7.6 million PS5s by April 2021

Sony's plans are ambitious and the words of CFO Hiro Totoki prove it. The company wants to make a lot of money by the end of the fiscal year, although it realizes that every sold unit of PS5 will equal loss.

7.6 million units of PlayStation 5, this is Sony's main sales target for its upcoming next-gen console during the fiscal year in which it is released. These are the words of Sony's Chief Financial Officer, Hiro Totoki, who is not hiding that he would like the results of PlayStation 4 to be beaten in the first months after the launch of the next-gen platform (via GamesIndustry.biz).

This will probably not be so difficult, given that more pre-orders have been submitted on PS5 in 12 hours than for PS4 in 12 weeks (in the US at least). Sony's CEO, Jim Ryan, informed in an interview for Reuters that not everyone will be able to buy the console on release day due to the number of people willing to place pre-orders.

On the other hand, employees of the Japanese company realize that initially the PS5 will incur losses, as the sale of hardware itself will not be enough to cover the costs of development and promotion. However, Totoki assures investors that there is no need to worry about the money, it will probably come from upcoming games as well as various services such as PlayStation Plus.

Confirmation of this thesis can be found in the financial results of Sony Interactive Entertainment from Q2 2020 (also available on GamesIndustry.biz). 75% of revenues came from various types of digital programs as well as online offers.
