Square Enix Shows Ray Tracing Implementation in Luminous Engine

Square Enix revealed a demo showing the capabilities of the latest version of Luminous Engine graphics technology. The engine supports the famed ray tracing and its capabilities are truly impressive.

Another demo presenting the capabilities of ray tracing.

Square Enix presented the Back Stage demo, which presents the capabilities of the new version of Luminous Engine. The technology will support real time ray tracing (and more specifically its variant called path tracing) and you have to admit that the effect can take your breath away. Anyway, look for yourself.

"Back Stage is a showcase demo of our work to answer the question, "How can you use ray tracing in a next generation game?" GeForce RTX graphics cards have power beyond our imagination, and with NVIDIA's technology even real-time path tracing has become a reality. Together with Luminous Engine and RTX technology, we have taken one more step forward towards the kind of beautiful and realistic game that we strive to create," said Takeshi Aramaki, head of Luminous Productions.

The engine will be used to develop games for the next generation of hardware, starting with the mysterious, still undisclosed AAA production from Luminous Productions. The video can therefore be a kind of trailer of what we can expect in the coming years when it comes to graphics in PC games. It is worth noting that the presented demo was running on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card.

After Unreal Engine, CryEngine and Unity, Liminous Engine is the next graphic engine whose creators emphasize the importance of ray tracing. Many gamers believe that technology is not worth the price for the time being (for now, using this feature requires buying a Nvidia GeForce RTX series GPU), but it looks like it could actually play an important role in the industry in the future. Especially as games is slowly emerging, which clearly show the potential of this solution. A great example is the recently published Control, which convinced many doubters to change their minds.
