Star Wars: Obi-Wan Will Also Use Unreal Engine

Ewan McGregor will play the lead role in Disney+'s series about Obi-Wan. The actor revealed in an interview that the same special effects will be used on the set as in The Mandalorian.

Obi-Wan will navigate through the virtual space created by the graphic engine.

The StarWars saga has had and still has a great influence not only on the shape of the science fantasy genre, but also on the development of movie technology. The original trilogy was in itself unique in terms of the scale of production and a multitude of practical effects, while the prequels delighted with CGI characters and the fact that they were shot fully digitally (apart from Phantom Menace).

The Mandalorian has put the bar even higher. It gave up typical greenscreens in favor of specially generated space based on Unreal Engine. In fact, it looked like this:

Ewan McGregor confirmed that in his latest series about Obi-Wan the creators will use the same technology as we can see in The Mandalorian.

“[The prequels] were all blue screen and green screen and it was hard to imagine, but nowadays I think things have moved on so much, and I think a lot of what you see is gonna be what we see on the set. I don’t know if you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes of The Mandalorian series, but they employ that incredible screen…it’s pretty amazing. It makes you feel like you’re in the place, it’s going to feel realer for us, as actors. And I think we’ll be using some of that technology on our show.”

The future of the show's further production was very uncertain for some time. The works were suspended, and even earlier, one could hear rumors about the cancelation of the series. At the beginning of April the doubts were dispelled and the name of the new screenwriter was officially announced. It is Joby Harold, the man responsible for writing King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and the production of John Wick 3. Disney+ does not intend to stop and prepares a sequel to Rogue 1 with Diego Luna in the lead role.
