Tencent Invests in Devs of DayZ and Arma 3

Chinese company Tencent has acquired a minority stake in Bohemia Interactive, as reported on the official website of the Czech team. Details of the transaction were not disclosed.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Tencent has bought out a minority stake in Bohemia Interactive;
  2. Details about the transaction have not been officially announced;
  3. Representatives of the Czech team emphasize that they will continue to operate independently under the current management.

In June, last year, news broke that the Chinese company Tencent had decided to purchase a majority stake in Bohemia Interactive, the devs of DayZ and the Arma series. Representatives of the Czech team quickly dismissed these reports. And, technically speaking, they told the truth. Tencent has not bought out the majority stake in Bohemia Interactive. It bought a minority stake (less than 50%). The information appeared on the official website of the Czech team.

Details of the transaction were not provided, so we don't know exactly what percentage Tencent has in Bohemia Interactive, how much it had to spend on it and what rights it currently holds. However, based on how it usually goes in such situations, the Chinese received, among other things, a portion of the company's profits and the ability to manage the audit. Bohemia Interactive representatives themselves have stressed that their company will still operate independently under the current management.

It is worth noting that Bohemia Interactive and Tencent have already worked together. Both companies introduced the Ylands platform to the Chinese market, enabling us to, among others, preparr our own open-worlds on PC and mobile devices.

Here is what Bohemia Interactive's CEO Marek Španel had to say about the deal:

"We are pleased to deepen our relationship with Tencent, one of the most significant internet companies in the world. We look forward to working on our current and future generations of games with the support of a strong partner that has known us for many years and understands our unique approach to online games."

So hopes are high, but how will this collaboration ultimately turn out? The coming years should provide an answer to this question.
