Is Stellar Blade a game only for fans of soulslikes? In our guide, we try to explain whether it's a game from the soulslike genre - what are the main similarities to this type of games and what can distinguish Stellar Blade from From Software productions.

Main similarities to soulslike games

1 - Stellar Blade: Is this game a soulslike? - FAQ - Stellar Blade Guide
  1. One of the main similarities to soulslike games is the presence of camps that function similarly to campfires, e.g. those from the Dark Souls series. Their main function is to rest, which revives all the monsters in the area. In the camps, you can also develop your character, buy skills or use fast travel.
  2. Another similarity is the limited number of medications you can use. The main type of medicine is a Rechargeable Tumbler - it has a limited number of uses, which is replenished after resting in a camp. The remaining medications are available in limited quantities and by default, you will not find an automatic health regeneration option in the game.
  3. The combat puts a lot of emphasis on parrying and dodging. Timing is very important - perfect execution of an action can activate its perfect variant, while a miss can result in receiving damage from opponents. During fights, you will also have to deal with unique enemy attacks symbolized by colors. For example, yellow attacks have to be dodged, while blue attacks require the Blink skill. Quick and appropriate reactions are important.

Major differences

To sum up, Stellar Blade draws a lot of inspiration from Souls games, but, despite many similarities, it is not a full-fledged soulslike - Stellar Blade: Is this game a soulslike? - FAQ - Stellar Blade Guide
  1. One of the most important things that distinguishes Stellar Blade from soulslikes is the lack of stamina management mechanic or other similar statistic. You don't have to worry that Eve will suddenly lose her strength and become an easy target. The game puts great emphasis on performing combos correctly, and as you advance in the campaign, you can gain access to more complex attacks.
  2. Dying in the game has no serious consequences - you don't lose experience or any equipment. Moreover, you don't have to repeat a large portion of the game - the heroine can usually respawn close to the place where she died.
  3. The game has an option to adjust the difficulty level. In addition to the default normal difficulty level during your first playthrough, you can also choose a story mode. It makes the opponents much weaker - their attacks inflict less damage and they are less resistant to Eve's attacks. It is worth adding that XP farming, known from many Souls games, is available here - you can defeat the same monsters repeatedly to gain development points faster.

To sum up, Stellar Blade draws a lot of inspiration from Souls games, but, despite many similarities, it is not a full-fledged soulslike. Those who don't like soulslikes should find something for them. The same goes for players who prefer action games like Devil May Cry.
