Disco Elysium: How not to pay for a night in Whirling-in-Rags?
An overnight stay at the Whirling-in-Rags hostel in Disco Elysium costs as much as 20 reals. From this page of the guide you will find out if you can avoid the lodging fee and how to unlock free rest in your own accommodation.
Last update:
Paid accommodation can make it difficult for you to play Disco Elysium and manage your money. In our guide, we explain what the main idea of staying at the Whirling-in-Rags hostel is and how to get access to lodging with the option of a free night's sleep - this will be a shack on the coast to unlock later in the game.
Paid stay in Whirling-in-Rags

Accommodation in the game is paid by default - the main character rents a room in the Whirling-in-Rags hostel, where you start a new game. You pay for the night at receptionist Garte, who can be found in the bar area on the ground floor. There are two tasks involving this NPC:
- Pay for damages - you need to pay a one-time fee of 130 reals for the damage done to the hotel room (this is one of the first official quests in the game).
- Find money for rent and pay Garte - rent is due - 20 reals - every time you want to spend the night at Whirling-in-Rags. The payment is mandatory on the first and second days of the game (Monday and Tuesday).
If you're having problems trying to come up with the cash, visit How to make money? page of our guide where we show exemplary ways of getting reales.

- You can crash in the hostel room only after 9:00 pm and it will only be open if you've paid Garte the rent. Interact with the bed and choose to sleep to progress to a new day.
There is also a hidden option - sleeping in the dumpster - which we describe in detail in our trophy guide for the game. However, this isn't a viable way of solving the problem of the rent money as choosing it ends the game prematurely. Encountered benches only allow to skip time, without the option to spend the night.
Free resting location - Shack on the Coast

- Spending the night for free is possible only after advancing to day 3 (Wednesday) - first, you need to unlock access to the western part of the map and we describe the process in detail on How to get to western Martinaise? page of our guide.
- Make your way to the central part of the fishing village and talk to the woman doing the laundry - we mark this NPC on the attached screenshot.

- During the ensuing conversation, you'll learn that one of the shacks in the village is uninhabited. The laundry woman will additionally also have a key for it. You don't have to pay anything for it - simply choose the option confirming your desire to get the key.

- With the key you can open the shack and inside there will be a bed. Same as with the hostel, you can go to sleep there starting from 09:00 pm.
You can still pay rent for the room in Whirling-in-Rags and stay there instead of the shack. However, we don't recommend this, as the accumulated cash is better spent on other things.
