A first-person action game with open world, set in a science fiction reality. The Signal From Tölva was developed by the independent developer Big Robot studio, the creators of the humorous Sir, You Are Being Hunted. This time, the player assumes the role of a hacker and takes control of robots that decided to explore an alien planet on their own. In this way, we have to investigate the source of a mysterious signal emitted from beneath the planet’s surface. While conducting the search in the vast, open world, we will often have to clash with hostile factions with the use of a rich arsenal of futuristic weapons and gadgets, including a plasma shield, shockwaves, and so on. Should the robot we control be destroyed, we can hack into another one’s computer and continue playing. Graphics-wise, The Signal From Tölva presents a significantly higher quality than Sir, You Are Being Hunted. The game world combines an original comic style with landscapes characteristic of the science fiction genre.

An arcade real-time strategy game by Pocketwatch Games, featuring old-school pixel art visuals. The action of Tooth and Tail takes place during an animal revolution, modeled to the conflicts of the turn of 19th and 20th century, where several factions comprised of different animal species fight to the death. Gameplay mechanics resemble classic RTS productions—their foundations lay in resource gathering, base building, and tactical combat. In the game, however, we can not issue direct orders to individual units. Instead, we assume control of their commander, who moves throughout the battlefield with a banner in his hand. His task is to designate places in which buildings will be built and show his subordinates their targets. Since we control just one character, the controls of Tooth and Tail resemble a typical action game rather than strategy, and most processes were adequately automated so that the player can focus on pure fun.

A strategy role-playing game set in the early Middle Ages, and the first production by Sunburned Games. The game takes place in the 7th century Europe, and there is a large focus on historical accuracy and the plot, divided into campaign for each of the playable nations (e.g. the Danish, the Franks, the Picts and the Anglo-Saxons). Independently of the chosen nation, you play as a chief of a small clan, whose duty is to care for their home village and to lead their warriors during the battles with enemies. The gameplay revolves around two seasons. While you spend winter mostly in the village, planning and managing your people and resources, in summer you sail out, usually to raid others. While the exploring part takes place in real time, the combat is turn based and features card game elements.

An action RPG set in unique fantasy world, developed by Japanese studio Gust, know from the Atelier and Ar tonelico series. Nights of Azure takes us to an isolated island kingdom, in which people must face demonic creatures that roam at night. The main heroine, Arnice, is a warrior gifted with dark powers. Her duty is to protect priestess Lilysee who – according to legends – can lift the curse that was cast on the land by sacrificing herself. To prevail against overwhelming forces of evil, Arnice has to gradually abandon her humanity, while Lilysee tries to accept her fate. Gameplay of Nights of Azure shares characteristics with the hack and slash genre. We observe the three-dimensional world from third-person perspective, as the heroine fights with enemies. Those battles are purely arcade and fought with the assistance of demonic minions. Between missions – main or secondary – we can visit our base, where we may talk with NPCs and unlock new powers.

The 12th expansion for 2012’s grand strategy game by Paradox Interactive, Crusader Kings II. In The Reaper’s Due, the developers focused on historical epidemics such as the Black Death which was the plague that gathered a bloody harvest in 13th century Europe. Therefore, the add-on introduces several new mechanics. The most important ones are obviously diseases that spread throughout the map of the continent. They have a negative influence on, among other things, our army’s numbers as well as finances. The latter can be replenished by forcing large dividends on prosperous provinces that pay us in gold and workforce. We can protect our people from diseases, though, thanks to hospitals and doctors who have access to the latest medical knowledge but their presence not always can prevent an epidemic. Apart from the aforementioned novelties, the gameplay is traditionally enriched by new event chains.

The gameplay here is based on the fundamentals of the said predecessor, delivering a realistic, tactical shooter game that places the ability to plan and cooperate within the team above good reflexes - one stray bullet can put an end to the player's life in this game. The game allows for competition on several famous battlefields of the World War II, such as beaches of Sicily or Belgian forests covered with snow. Depending on the game mode, the teams are required to achieve certain goals, such as taking over the outposts. In comparison to Insurgency, the game introduces many elements making the gameplay more enjoyable. For instance, the opportunity to get promoted and become an officer or call in an artillery strike. Also, the guns behave more convincingly now.

Combat itself is quite unusual, since subsequent clashes involve forming words from a grand dictionary that consists of roughly 190 thousand English words. Since the player has a limited number of slots for cards in their equipment, it is important to select them carefully. When the player dies, they lose a number of their cards, but what is another interesting feature, those are picked up by the creature that defeated the player - the monster later on makes an appearance in another player's adventures. If that player manages to slay the monster, they can return the card to its previous owner or simply keep it. Created by Blazing Badger, AIPD is a co-op top-down twin-stick shooter resembling the classic arcade hits from the 80s. In the game you control futuristic police ships. Within limited time you have to destroy as many increasingly stronger enemies as you can. You can modify your ship between the missions, adjusting not only its appearance, but also parameters such as agility, firepower, or shields. The game's numerous challenges and game modes are generated randomly and, due to the loads of possible combinations of enemies and world variations, each level is unique. The visuals of AIPD make use of the contrast between black background and the vivid, flashy colors, employing an entire palette of modern visual effects.

Set in a science fiction world, an old-school first-person shooter in a retro style inspired by similar productions from the 90s. In this debut project of Pixel Titans, you take control of a scavenger who suddenly loses a huge space cruiser ICARUS from his radar during one of the scouting missions. He decides to see what is wrong and ends up having to fight for his life on the deck of this humongous ship. Mechanically, Strafe is a dynamic, hard-core shooter in which you have to constantly fight, move, and dodge attacks in order to survive. Additionally, the death of the hero requires you to start everything from the beginning. The diverse locations you visit are, to some degree, procedurally-generated. To make the struggle easier, you get to choose one of three types of weapons, which you can upgrade as you progress. The title also features a simple crafting system and trading.

Action, Very Brutal, FPP, Singleplayer, Stealth, Survival Horror.

The third story DLC included in the Season Pass for the dark survival horror The Evil Within released in 2014. Just like the original game, the expansion is set in the ominous asylum in which a brutal massacre takes place. Interestingly, The Executioner tells the story from the perspective of an enemy of The Evil Within’s protagonist. This character, known as The Keeper, is a hideous monster with a safe in the place of his head and wielding a butcher’s axe – the incarnation of Sebastian’s innermost nightmares. This way the developers from Tango Gameworks (led by the father of the Resident Evil series, Shinji Mikami) enabled players to witness the game’s twisted plot from a different point of view. What is more, this solution also allowed them to turn gameplay rules by 180 degrees. Instead of running away and fighting various monsters, players themselves become the eponymous Executioner and brutally murder innocent victims. This shift is highlighted by changing the perspective from TPP to first-person.

Strategy, Multiplayer, PBeM, Singleplayer, Turn-based, American Civil War, 19th Century.

A turn-based strategy game developed by Western Civilization Software. As the title suggests, the game focuses on the American Civil War, during which brothers often had to turn against each other when the Confederate States declared war upon the northern states, devastating the United States of America. The action of this game is set at the initial stages of the American Civil War, allowing players to participate in the events such as the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Wilson's Creek (1861), the Battle of Mill Springs and the Battle of Williamsburg (1862). Apart from the large campaigns, the game delivers a number of smaller scenarios, including the hypothetical ones presenting an alternative course of events. Battles take place on huge maps covering the area of 50 square miles, divided into 75-yard hexagons. A single turn corresponds to 24 hours in real time. Brother against Brother: The Drawing of the Sword builds on realism – regiments have their unique skills that made them famous during the Civil War. Apart from the units’ stats and player’s tactical decisions, the battle is affected by the amount of supplies, changing weather conditions, and the smoke suspended over the battlefield.
