Developed by the debuting independent studio Storm in a Teacup, an unusual first-person adventure game, the visuals of which are strongly connected with the plot and mechanics. The action of N.E.R.O. takes place in a surreal world that is projected in a little boy’s mind. The uniqueness of the title comes from omnipresent bioluminescence – dark sceneries are lighted up by bright, phosphorescent objects that at the same time serve as a kind of road signs. Mechanically, to some extent the game resembles the cult Myst series and the core of the game is exploration and solving puzzles that use different aspects of light and time. With the progress, you gradually find out the purpose of the hero’s adventure and depending on your choices, which can emphasize such values as love and devotion, you reach one of a few alternative endings of the story.

The missions are played out in randomly generated locations, and the players need to navigate the corridors of the station in order to reach the various control consoles that are located inside them. These consoles will allow us to, e.g. activate the station’s engines, defensive systems and gun emplacements. The production has been designed with a co-op mode for two players in mind, and strict cooperation and coordination between both operators is required in order to achieve success. In cases where a second player is unavailable, they will be replaced by an AI player. The players assume control over United States’ 1st Infantry Division, also known as “The Big Red One” during its WWII tour of duty, including Northern Africa, Sicily, and D-Day landings. The game takes place in real time, with the player receiving control over numerous types of units such as infantry, artillery, armored units, or engineering battalions. Our units can amass experience and be refitted with new types of weaponry, which makes them more viable and useful on the battlefield. The developers have not introduced any major changes to the mechanics, keeping the classic top-down view and gameplay seen in other installments of the series. Nevertheless, the players are left with more freedom as to the choice of the location and method of approaching the enemy, while our actions are influenced by weather conditions, type of terrain, or well-being and morale of our units. Aside from the single-player campaign, the game introduces an extensive multiplayer component, with head-to-head and cooperation modes. It should be mentioned that Close Combat: The Bloody First is the first installment of the series that uses a 3D graphical engine, which also offers more detailed models and animations of the individual units.

Heather will have to run from the agents sent after her, but also find the cause of this unusual situation and a way out of the virtual universe. The player is taken on a sentimental journey across the history of gaming - the creators were inspired by the most popular FPS games, platformers and real-time strategies from the 1990s, such as Doom or Wolfenstein 3D. The inspirations are visible in level design, mechanics, and available weaponry. The same applies to the old-school visuals Bedlam The Game comes with.
