Anno is a highly popular series of economic strategy games from the city builder genre, published by Ubisoft and developed by Ubisoft Blue Byte. Anno 117: Pax Romana described here is the eighth main installment in this series.

Gameplay

As the title suggests, Anno 117: Pax Romana takes the series to the 2nd century AD.

Two provinces

The game allows us to take on the role of a Roman governor, who, while controlling the province of Latium (modern-day central Italy) or the Celtic land of Albion (the ancient name for modern-day England), must manage them according to his own discretion. We can aim for economic growth and embrace diversity by adopting Celtic traditions, or we can impose a strict rule and spread Roman culture across the territories under our control within the empire.

Balancing between subjects and the emperor

Similar to previous installments in the series, Anno 117: Pax Romana focuses on building and caring for our subjects. The wide range of options related to the former has been enriched with the ability to construct impressive aqueducts, while one of the ways to show our care for citizens can be organizing spectacles in coliseums, with naumachiae (spectacular naval battle reenactments involving real ships) being a highlight.

Prima Games: 9 / 10 by Enzo Zalamea

Anno 117: Pax Romana successfully expands the franchise, blending the depth of Anno 1800’s refined mechanics with a stunning Roman backdrop. Set across the provinces of Latium and Albion, it challenges players with complex city-building systems, resource management, and strategic decision-making, in an addicting way. The addition of diagonal construction, land combat, and an intricate research and religion system adds new layers of creativity and control. Anno 117: Pax Romana is one of the best city-building management games money can buy right now.

But Why Tho?: 9.5 / 10 by Matt Donahue

Anno 117: Pax Romana is a remarkably expansive game that I can sit and play for hours, even with its little notifications telling me to take a break. This is one of the best games I've played all year. There is a great deal of depth and customization that really showcases player choice and creativity, with an unbeatable replayability.

GRYOnline.pl: 7.5 / 10 by Konrad Sarzyński

Anno 117 is, as a whole, a fine game that will allow fans of the series to enter a new era and enjoy mechanics that are more complex than those of its predecessor. The soundtrack is great, and the graphics are very pleasing to the eye. However, I feel that Ubisoft has played it a little too safe and lazy. Although I personally love Anno 1800, I didn't necessarily want the new instalment to be so similar to it.
