Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the cult action adventure game by Illusion Softworks from 2002. The Hangar 13 team is responsible for the game. The game was published as a separate production and part of the Mafia: Trilogy set, which also includes remastered editions of the next two instalments of the series.

Plot

The basic plot assumptions remained unchanged in relation to the original. The action of the game takes place in the fictional American city of Lost Heaven in the last years of the interwar period (1930-1938). The main hero is Thomas Angelo, a young taxi driver looking to earn money even in the most suspicious districts. When his last course results in a confrontation with an influential family of mobsters, Thomas miraculously manages to reach a restaurant belonging to the competitive mafia with his clients. This is how the story of the protagonist's relationship with the Salieri family begins, which many years later will lead Thomas to police questioning as a crown witness. His memories are revealed in the form of flashbacks during the conversation with the detective.

God is a Geek: 8.5 / 10 by Chris White

Mafia: Definitive Edition oozes style and substance, harking back to a time when story was everything. The gameplay can be a little clumsy, but entwined with these awkward moments come excitement.

Attack of the Fanboy: 4 / 5 by Dean James

As the title infers, Mafia: Definitive Edition is indeed the definitive version of the classic game, this time with completely redone visuals and updated gameplay that makes the game feel like it could have released today as a brand new game and few would have known the difference.

PlayStation LifeStyle: 8 / 10

I'm going to level with you, reader: I went into Mafia Definitive Edition expecting to be underwhelmed. What I ended up playing was far-and-away, infinitely better than I was expecting, featuring fantastic storytelling, compelling, yet immensely flawed characters (in a good way), and a world that is teeming with life. You don't have to be a fan of the original game in order to feel like a member of the family. Don't worry! There's more than enough hot lead to go around.

The main pros of the game

  • Faithful Remake: The game is a well-executed remake that stays true to the original while modernizing many aspects, particularly in storytelling and graphics.
  • Strong Narrative: The story of Tommy Angelo is compelling, with well-developed characters and high-quality voice acting that enhances the cinematic experience.
  • Visuals and Atmosphere: The graphics are stunning, effectively recreating the 1930s setting with detailed environments, impressive lighting, and atmospheric sound design.
  • Gameplay Improvements: While some mechanics remain old-school, the driving and gunplay have seen enhancements, making for a more engaging experience overall.
  • Short and Accessible: The game features a relatively short campaign (around 10-12 hours), making it suitable for players with limited time.

The main cons of the game

  • Linear Structure: The game is quite linear, with limited opportunities for exploration outside of the main missions, which some players find restrictive.
  • Driving Mechanics: While improved, the driving can still feel clunky and unresponsive at times, particularly in missions that require precision.
  • Generic Combat: Gunplay is described as feeling less impactful compared to the original, with some players noting that shooting mechanics can feel outdated or unresponsive.
  • Collectibles and Side Content: Many players found the collectibles to be excessive and tedious, and there is a lack of meaningful side missions, making the open world feel empty.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Enhanced Open World: Players expressed a desire for more interactive elements in the open world, such as the ability to enter buildings or engage in side activities beyond the main storyline.
  • Improved NPC Variety: There are complaints about the lack of diversity among NPCs, which can break immersion due to repetitive character designs.
  • Additional Radio Channels/Songs: Players noted that more variety in the in-game radio stations and songs would enhance the experience.
  • More Dynamic Gameplay Mechanics: Suggestions for better combat mechanics and AI improvements were made, as players found the current systems to be somewhat basic and lacking depth.

Summary

  • Overall, while Mafia: Definitive Edition has received praise for its storytelling and visual fidelity, it has also faced criticism for its linearity and certain gameplay mechanics that could benefit from further refinement.
