Taika Waititi Will Direct the New Star Wars Movie

Disney revealed that one of the new Star Wars movies will be made by Taika Waititi, director of such productions as Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit. In addition, it was confirmed that Leslye Headland, co-creator of Russian Doll, will produce a series set in the universe of Star Wars for the Disney+ platform.

Taika Waititi will direct not only Thor: Love and Thunder for Disney, but also the new Star Wars film.

After the completion of the latest trilogy closing the Skywalker story, we will say goodbye to Star Wars movies for some time. However, Disney has ambitious plans. We learned that Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, who won an Oscar for its script this year, and The Mandalorian (the last episode) and What We Do in the Shadows, will stand behind the camera of one of the upcoming Star Wars movies.

Taika Waititi is to be responsible not only for directing, but also for the script of the said Star Wars movie. He will work with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who had previously gained experience working on Penny Dreadful and the award-winning war film 1917.

Disney has hired more people to take on new projects from the universe of Star Wars.

In addition, Disney has also confirmed previous rumors and Leslye Headland (Russian Doll, Bachelorette) is indeed working on a new Star Wars show prepared for Disney+. According to unofficial reports, it is to focus on female characters and present a period not previously shown in any live-action Star Wars production. Headland will be the showrunner, executive producer and screenwriter of this production.

The titles of both the movie and the series were not disclosed. We also did not learn any details or premiere dates, but we will certainly wait for them a bit. We would like to remind that the first film from the planned Star Wars movies will make its debut in late 2022 at the earliest. Disney is also working on other Star Wars series for the Disney+ platform, namely the second season of The Mandalorian, currently in post-production, Obi-Wan Kenobi's adventures (played by Ewan McGregor again) and the prequel to Rogue One, which recently lost its showrunner.
