EA Cancels 3 Games, Including Titanfall Legends [Update]

Electronic Arts has had a successful fiscal quarter, but does not intend to continue developing Battlefield and Apex Legends on mobile devices.

Update #2

More reports have emerged about the canceled Titanfall Legends. In the game, we were supposed to see BT, Titan of Jack Cooper from Titanfall 2, brought back to life, other heroes of Titanfall as well as the mercenary Kuben Blisek, whom, incidentally, would be the main protagonist. Legends from Apex Legends would be the source of special powers, and the gameplay would be inspired by Doom Eternal.

Update #1

As it turns out, EA has also canceled an unannounced single player game. From information provided by Bloomberg we learn that the title was set in a universe shared by Titanfall and the online shooter Apex Legends. Its code name was Titanfall Legends. The 50-member Respawn studio team working on the game was headed by Mohammed Alavi, co-creator of the first two installments of Modern Warfare.

Original message

Ubisoft is not the only one cancelling games. Just as the French publisher recently canceled several projects, ended the life of Hyper Scape and blocked network functions in older games, so is Electronic Arts preparing to abandon Battlefield Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile. The former did not even debut on the market.

In both cases, the decision was justified by the expectations of players, which apparently were not met by these games. The servers of the mobile Apex will be closed on May 1 (less than a year after its release), and the developers have already blocked microtransactions.

However, that's where the similarities end. Electronic Arts can't complain too much about financial problems (or openly annoyed employees). In the third quarter of fiscal 2023, the company earned 1.3 billion dollars in revenue, improving its result from a year ago by 13%. The same is true for revenue for all three quarters.

Nevertheless, the past three months (i.e. the period from October to December) were supposed to be "challenging" for EA. At least in theory, because although the company did not release any major game during that period, the latest FIFA could boast a record quarter. In North America alone, the series increased its sales by 50% year-on-year. The mobile and online installments of the series have also performed excellently.

Despite this Electronic Arts has lowered its financial forecasts for the whole 2023 fiscal year. In part, this is due to the aforementioned "death" of mobile Battlefield and Apex and the delayed release of the new Star Wars Jedi. Concerns were also raised about "trends" from the last quarter. These include a decline in revenue from Apex Legends, admittedly predicted, but steeper than forecast.

At the same time, Chris Suh - EA's CFO - stated that the company's priority will be "the player experience, and investments are being directed to where they can have the most positive impact on our players and on growth [of revenues - ed. note]."
