Sony Wants to Buy New Developer Teams

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan revealed that the company was thinking of buying new developer studios to create games for PlayStation 5. Does Sony intend to thumb its nose at Microsoft?

The PlayStation family has a chance to grow.

Exclusive single player games secured Sony's victory in the battle against Microsoft for the title of the most popular console of the current generation. It has been said for a long time that the Japanese giant has no intention of giving up its path and will continue to bet on huge AAA productions. Although the exact launch date for PlayStation 5 is still unknown, the company has managed to ensure that it will create titles for real fanatics, and that Google Stadia and Nintendo are not its potential competitors.

Good news from the Sony camp continue. According to Video Games Chronicle, the company is open to purchase of new studios that will create dedicated PlayStation games. Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, commented on the topic and said that exclusive content is more important than ever before.

Currently, SIE has 13 development studios under its belt, located in Europe, the United States and Japan. These include Naughty Dog (Uncharted series, The Last of Us), Guerrilla Games (the Killzone series, Horizon: Zero Dawn) and Sucker Punch Productions (the InFamous series, Ghost of Tsushima). Despite this, there are still many experienced teams left on the market, which remain independent of any of the giants. Taking them over could further enrich the offer of exclusive titles for the Sony console.

Jim Ryan's words make sense in the context of his earlier statements and reports from the studio. Creating AAA games and investing in titles for a single player is connected with the need to employ a sufficient number of people. The declarations of the CEO of Sony can also be seen as a gauntlet thrown in front of Microsoft, which for several years has been effectively buying up new developer studios. If you really want PlayStation 5 to be better than Xbox Scarlett, then SIE must take care of the right game catalogue.
