Rise of the Ronin: How to open the gate to Yokohama?

During the initial hours of Rise of the Ronin, the story will lead you to the city of Yokohama, and unfortunately, every gate to the settlement will be locked shut. On this page of our guide, we describe the situation and show how to get the Checkpoint Permit. You'll also learn on what rules you can visit Yokohama in later stages of the game.

Yokohama gates locked

1. Reaching Yokohama is a part of The Bridge of Yokohama story quest which will be initiated quite early in the game.
2. Your first approach to the city will be made from the southern side and the gate found there will be locked shut. The side bridges that you'll encounter when attempting to find the way will also have their gates closed, and the obstacles cannot be overcome in any way, be it trying to jump over or destroy it.

1. After locating the main gate, you'll find an entrance that is guarded by sentries. By talking to them, you'll learn that a Checkpoint Permit is needed to access the city. The only possible way to go now is to get the Permit, as no amount of threatening or pleading will change the guards' minds.

How to get the Checkpoint Permit?

The effort to get the Permit will be the leading force behind the next story quests you'll undertake. You need to:

1. Liberate the southern village - This is a Public Order location, so your task is to defeat all encountered bandits.
2. Talk to the village chief - you can talk to him once the bandits are taken care of.
3. Visit a nearby cave - this is a part of a separate story quest Your Reward is in the Cave where you'll meet the Eccentric Ronin.
4. Initiate Curtain Falls, Curtain Rises story quest - during its course, you'll be accompanied by the Eccentric Ronin.
5. Defeat Gonzo - this boss battle is described in detail in the Bosses chapter of our guide - after defeating him, you'll find a key.

1. With this key, you need to reach a locked building by the cliff (screenshot 1). After opening it, look for a large chest (screenshot 2) and it will contain the Checkpoint Permit.
2. You don't have to backtrack all the way down, as at the moment of finding the chest, the glider will be unlocked. Use it and glide towards the city. The obtained Permit will suffice for gaining entry to the city.

How to enter Yokohama in the later stages of the game?

1. From now on, you can use the Checkpoint gate, which will be open at all times.
2. Additionally, over time, 2 side passages will be opened (previously with locked gates), through which you can also enter the city.
3. You will be able to access Yokohama freely from north and west. There won't be any walls, gates, fences to stop you there.
