If you become a citizen of the United Colonies, then:
- you will be able to buy your own apartment in New Atlantis. The woman who sells them in the MAST district is the one who informs that only citizens are entitled to buy a house.
- you'll get a discount from any merchant who trades on planets that are part of the United Colonies.
- with the citizenship, you will also receive several thousand credits.
Joining the Vanguard
To become a citizen of the United Colonies, you must join the Vanguard stationed in New Atlantis (it's an UC faction). There is no other way - even though at the beginning of the game you can choose a trait that you are from the United Colonies, it won't grant you citizenship.

To join the Vanguard, talk to Commander John Tuala - he is recruiting. The man is located in the MAST district in a large building above the transit railway. After completing the Supra et Ultra quest and passing the exam, you will become a member of the Vanguard.

You won't get citizenship right away after joining the Vanguard. You still need to complete a few United Colonies faction quests, but you don't have to do all of them. The missions you need to complete to obtain citizenship are:
- Supra et Ultra;
- Grunt Work;
- Delivering Devils;
- Eyewitness;
- Friends Like These.

At the end of the Friends Like These quest, you will take an oath before Elisabeth MacIntyre and become a citizen of the United Colonies. Congratulations, now you can buy a house in Starfield!
