A sports-focused publisher that operates under Take-Two Interactive. 2K Sports primarily releases its games on PC and consoles.
2K Sports traces its roots back to January 2005. That's when Take-Two Interactive acquired Visual Concepts and Kush Games from Sega , along with the 2K brand. The next day, Take-Two launched two publishing labels: 2K Games, aimed at a diverse lineup, and 2K Sports, which would focus exclusively on sports titles.
2K was originally based in New York City, but after a fire damaged its headquarters, the company moved to Novato, California. In 2007, 2K expanded its family with 2K Play, a label dedicated to casual games.
Over the years, 2K Sports has built a diverse lineup of sports titles, with many developed by Visual Concepts. While the NBA 2K series remains the company's flagship franchise, 2K Sports has also seen success with other popular titles, including NHL 2K and WWE 2K. In 2021, 2K Sports acquired HB Studios and teamed up with Tiger Woods. The legendary golfer was set to oversee The Golf Club series, which was later rebranded as PGA Tour 2K.
In May 2017, Christoph Hartmann, one of the company's founders, stepped down as president of 2K Games, with David Ismailer taking the reins.
In March 2021, Take-Two Interactive acquired HB Studios and the rights to the Golf Club series, which was subsequently revived as PGA Tour 2K. For the project, they partnered with Tiger Woods, who would later contribute to future installments. The first games in the revived series were PGA Tour 2K21 and PGA Tour 2K23.
After the acquisition, HB Studios started operating under 2K Sports. Shortly after, HookBang’s Texas branch moved to Austin, merged with Visual Concepts, and was rebranded as Visual Concepts Austin.
