Cronos: The New Dawn is a survival horror game that transports us to a universe that combines retro-futurism and brutalism. The game was developed by Bloober Team - a Polish studio specializing in scaring players, with projects such as The Medium, Layers of Fear series, or Silent Hill 2 Remake in their portfolio.

Gameplay

In Cronos: The New Dawn, we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). The adventure leads us through various locations, which we can view in two versions - from the past, admiring the brutalist architecture in all its glory, and also from the future, where we have to face the aberrations inhabiting the Earth (so-called Orphaned).

Analog Stick Gaming: 9 / 10 by Jeff M Young

Bloober Team found their confidence in the Silent Hill 2 remake, and this has shown a side of the studio that could be a force to be reckoned with. Cronos: The New Dawn is easily their best work, and I say that as someone who found the Silent Hill 2 remake to be absolutely jaw-dropping. There is potential for a sequel here, and with some smart choices on improving the aspect around combat, there could be a contender here to the genre that we really haven’t seen since Dead Space.

Wccftech: 8 / 10 by Francesco De Meo

With its by-the-books survival horror experience, its first few hours feeling more frustrating than fun due to clunky combat and average enemy design, Cronos: The Dawn seemed to be nothing more than an unremarkable survival horror heavily inspired by the Dead Space series. Push past the around two hours mark, however, and the game blossoms into one of Bloober Team's best titles to date, thanks to its quirky mechanics, solid level design, unique setting, and mystery-filled story.

Nintendo Life: 7 / 10 by Oliver Reynolds

Although Cronos: The New Dawn doesn't quite reach the heights of Bloober Team's excellent Silent Hill 2 remake, it's nevertheless the result of a studio that has levelled up significantly from the days of Layers of Fear and Blair Witch. It's a celebration of survival horror, paying homage to all the genre greats effectively, although failing to do anything truly original. That said, the setting and story really help elevate the experience. This is a solid Switch 2 version (assuming a rather unpleasant bug gets fixed soon), and there's real potential here for Cronos to become a central pillar of the genre going forward, should Bloober choose to expand upon it in the future.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Graphics: Many reviews praise the game's stunning visuals and immersive atmosphere, highlighting its effective use of lighting and detailed environments that evoke a sense of dread and nostalgia, particularly for those familiar with the setting of 1980s Poland.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The game features a unique resource management system where ammo and health are scarce, requiring players to strategize and think carefully about their actions. The combat system, while challenging, is described as satisfying, especially with the inclusion of mechanics like burning enemy corpses to prevent them from merging into stronger foes.
  • Story and Narrative: The story has been noted as engaging and thought-provoking, with several players appreciating its complexity and the way it unfolds. The lore and character development are compelling, with some players expressing a desire for more exploration of the narrative.
  • Sound Design: The sound design and music have received high praise for enhancing the horror experience, creating tension and atmosphere throughout the game.
  • Replayability: The game includes multiple endings and a New Game+ mode, encouraging players to explore different outcomes and strategies.

The main cons of the game

  • Technical Performance: Many users reported issues with performance, including frame drops and stuttering, particularly during high-action sequences. Some players noted crashes, especially during cutscenes, which detracted from the experience.
  • Inventory Management: While the limited inventory system is intended to enhance the survival horror experience, many players found it frustrating. The inability to drop items and the need to backtrack to manage resources were common complaints.
  • Difficulty and Combat: Some players felt that the combat could be overly punishing, with enemies that hit hard and the absence of a dodge mechanic making encounters feel unfair at times. There were complaints about the lack of variety in enemy designs and some bosses being less enjoyable.
  • Story Execution: A few reviews pointed out that while the story starts strong, it becomes convoluted or fails to answer key questions by the end. The pacing was also criticized, with some sections feeling drawn out or repetitive.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Difficulty Settings: Several players expressed a desire for adjustable difficulty settings, as the game can be quite challenging, particularly for casual players.
  • Map System: The absence of a traditional map was noted, with players suggesting that clearer navigation aids would improve the experience.
  • More Puzzles: Some users felt that the game could benefit from more environmental puzzles, as the focus on combat and resource management left little room for puzzle-solving elements that are often a staple of survival horror games.
  • Polish Voice Acting: As a Polish-developed game, the lack of a Polish voice acting option was mentioned as a missed opportunity to enhance immersion.

Summary

  • Overall, "Cronos: The New Dawn" has been well-received for its atmospheric design and engaging gameplay, though it suffers from technical issues and some gameplay mechanics that could use refinement. The game is recommended for fans of survival horror, particularly those who appreciate a challenging and immersive experience.
