February 10, 2015

Action, Alien (brand), Crafting, FPP, Science Fiction, Singleplayer, Stealth, Survival Horror.

The fourth expansion to a first-person survival horror - Alien: Isolation, developed by Creative Assembly. Like the previous expansion to the game (Safe Heaven), the Lost Contact DLC is a variation of the game’s Survivor Mode. However, in this particular DLC, the player returns to the Sebastopol space station and assumes the role of Axel. Gameplay mechanics build on the exploration of a new map, which now includes private Lorenz quarters and the station’s backup power generator area. The mission introduced by Lost Contact is divided into 10 challenges and features significantly higher difficulty level resulting from the fact that this time around the players have to fight off enemy waves of androids, humans and the Alien itself. In comparison the previous Alien: Isolation expansions, Lost Contact significantly stands out - during the mission, players have a lot of ground to cover. Moreover, should one fall in battle, he has to start all over, since he failed to complete the task he was assigned with. What makes it all slightly easier is the ability to construct useful items - this includes some new weapons such as a revolver or a crossbow. For completing this new mission, a player is rewarded with various items and perks.

A continuation to Gratuitous Space Battles developed by Positech Games. Along with its twin project – Gratuitous Tank Battles – the game presents a slightly different approach to the popular tower defense strategy game genre. Like in the first installment in the series, the players cannot directly influence the outcome of particular battles, and the key to success lies in proper planning and preparation. One can do this by constructing from scratch various units and manually selecting parts and elements of munitions. Then, one has to prepare battle formations and give orders to their commanders, sit back and observe how his protégés handle the battle by themselves. In comparison to the first installment in the series, the developers introduced several new gameplay mechanics – the most prominent being 3 new spaceship classes (battleships, heavy fighters, and destroyers). The available set of weapons and components has been significantly expanded. The game also introduces carrier ships and the necessity to replenish fuel reserves.

Our party can consist of such famous 19th-century scientists as Karol Darwin, Nikola Tesla, or Marie Curie. Each of them works for their own reputation and uses a unique weapon. While playing, we move through procedurally generated maps divided into hexes. Once we reach an interesting place, the perspective switches to the view typical for classical adventure games. In our travels, we can encounter local tribes and hidden treasures guarded by traps and various enemies — from wild animals and cannibals to dinosaurs or zombies. A refreshed version of an old-school RPG from Spiderweb Software; the game is a continuation to Avernum: Escape from the Pit. Avernum 2: Crystal Souls is set in the same fantasy world, and to be precise - in the undergrounds that were turned into a huge prison by the Empire, which rules the world. Once again player leads a group of prisoners, who as depicted in the previous installment, managed to assassinate the despotic leader of the Empire - Hawthorne. Now, they have to face the Empire's counter-attack - the wrongdoers' aim is to reclaim control of Avernum and get rid of all the rebels. The player leads a party of four characters and observes their actions from an isometric view. Taking part in turn-based encounters, the team gains experience, developing their statistics and skills. Battles are very complex, allowing the player to use magic (over 60 spells and hundreds of artifacts) and advanced combat tactics. While exploring, the player visits over a hundred diverse locations. In total, the game delivers about 40 hours of play, and three independent paths lead to victory over the Empire. When developing this refreshed version, the creators were focused mainly on improving the visuals.

Arcade, 2D, Platformers, Singleplayer, Nintendo Exclusive.

A 2D platform game featuring Kirby, one of the most famous Nintendo game characters. The production, which is a spiritual successor to Kirby: Power Paintbrush for DS, was developed for Wii U. The game utilizes the GamePad and its touchscreen. You use it to draw rainbow platforms in the clay world, which are then used by Kirby to move around and also avoid obstacles and enemies. There are standard levels and special maps, on which Kirby transforms into various machines and vehicles, such as .e.g. a submarine or a tank. This makes the gameplay more platformer-like, which is evident from boss battles, usually taking place at the end of a given level. The game features nice, very colorful visuals.

Three-dimensional platformer for the whole family developed by Nintendo. Yoshi’s Wooly World is set in a world made of yarn. We play as the titular green dinosaur Yoshi, one of the main mascots of the Japanese company; the game expands on concept of Kirby’s Epic Yarn. We received a classic platformer in 2.5D, in which our hero is followed by running eggs, which can be shot at various targets or parts of scenery. Thanks to the world being made of yarn, many objects can be unraveled to unlock new paths and secrets. Yoshi’s Wooly World offers a cooperation mode for two players. Each three-dimensional location is made of virtual yarn, and every character resembles a handcrafted puppet filled with cotton.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is a remastered version of Final Fantasy Type-0, a jRPG released in 2001 on PlayStation Portable exclusively in Japan. The HD version was released on PC and 8th generation consoles. The game takes place in the fantasy world Orience, which, after a period of peace, was once again divided by war. Story focuses on twelve adepts from a magic academy who were delegated to defend the country's borders. Being a part of a greater whole (Final Fantasy XIII), Type-0 HD has all the characteristic elements of the Final Fantasy series. Combat system used in the game combines the turn-based mechanics with solutions known from many action games. The game offers a vast world, filled with interesting NPCs and side quests to do. There are twelve characters for us to play as. Each of them has a different character, combat style, and special abilities. The biggest difference between the PSP and remastered versions are the visuals, now in high definition.

The third of the planned DLC additions to the second installment of the bestselling action RPG, created by the Japanese studio From Software. Along with the previous two it combines into a completely new storyline, the axis of which is the search for three legendary crowns. This time we will deal with getting the last of them, and the action will take us to a previously inaccessible, ancient temple. It was built in a cold, ice-covered land and designed to overwhelm with its size and the emptiness inside.
