American video game publisher owned by The Walt Disney Company. The company operated from 1988 to 2016. During this time, its portfolio included both games based on iconic Disney brands and entirely original productions.

History

Prehistory

The company's roots date back to 1988, when The Walt Disney Company established a new video game division. Walt Disney Computer Software operated from 1988 to 1994 and published games based on well-known franchises from the studio's portfolio, created by external development studios. At this stage, the company didn't achieve any significant success, and among the few successful titles released at its expense were the games Disney's Aladdin and Disney's The Lion King.

Disney Interactive and Buena Vista Games inception

In December 1994, the company was restructured and merged with Walt Disney Television and Telecommunications to form Disney Interactive. This company operated under this label from 1994 to 2002, releasing games made by external teams and licensing their brands to other publishers, led by Sony Computer Entertainment (now known as Sony Interactive Entertainment).

In 2003, Disney Interactive spun off an independent unit 0 Buena Vista Games. While Disney Interactive was supposed to focus on kids' games, Buena Vista Games was supposed to handle the mobile and online market. Buena Vista Games also oversaw the creation of video games, the most successful of which was the Kingdom Hearts series, developed in cooperation with Square Enix.

Over time, Buena Vista Games began to grow stronger. In April 2005, Avalanche Software's team joined forces with them. Soon after, the company set up a new game development studio called Propaganda Games, based in Vancouver. In September 2006, the Climax Racing team (later renamed Black Rock Studio) joined the group of teams working under its wings, and shortly afterwards, in November, another new studio, Fall Line Studios, was formed, which was to focus on the production of games for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii consoles.

The era of Disney Interactive Studios

Finally, in February 2007, Buena Vista Games gained a new name 0 Disney Interactive Studios. The publisher's portfolio was supposed to include both Disney-licensed productions and unrelated titles.

In July, the Disney Interactive Studios family expanded with the addition of the Junction Point team. In June 2008, there was another reorganization that led to the merger of Disney Interactive Studios and Walt Disney Internet Group, forming Disney Interactive Media Group. In January 2009, Fall Line Studios was incorporated into Avalanche Software, in February, the Chinese studio GameStar came under the company's wing, and in September, Wideload Games followed suit.

Between 2008 and 2012, Disney Interactive Studios experienced financial losses and had to close several development studios, including Propaganda Games, Black Rock Studio, and Junction Point. In 2012, after The Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilm, they were planning to add some casual games based on the Star Wars license to their collection.

Unfortunately, the company's days were numbered by then. Although there was hope for the 2013 project Disney Infinity, it wasn't enough to lift the whole company, despite the series' success. In 2016, it suffered a huge wave of layoffs, resulting in 700 people losing their jobs. Later that same year, Disney Interactive Studios officially ceased operations.
