The game’s story focuses on battling all sorts of monsters that are trying to invade the real world. The last obstacle on their way is you and your fortress. Consistently with the rules of the genre, gameplay is primarily about building various guard towers that work in many different ways.

The player becomes a leader of a group of survivors hiding in a gloomy underground shelter after a nuclear catastrophe. The game begins when the first bombs are about to fall. We have a limited amount of time to gather supplies for the first weeks of living underground.

The task of the players is to defend the sea fort against the attack of a fleet of enemy ships that are heading in its direction. Armello is set in a fairytale-like fantasy world populated by anthropomorphic animals. There are four clans striving to take away the power from the corrupted king. Gameplay centers on exploration, accomplishing missions, and combat.

The game gives you much freedom in building your fortress; you can choose the wall type and its shape, creating either a classic castle or a maze-like structure. Having finished the building part, you put your chosen units in the fortress; the units include knights, archers and wizards, who aid you with their abilities.

At first glance they may look quite adorable, but they're evil beasts, which must be stopped from reaching your base. To do that, you have to use the glove's power, which allows you to cast various spells, such as creating a wall of fire or throwing magical swords at the enemies.

The gameplay is divided into two segments. The first one allows you to overlook a map of the fantasy world and move your units on it. When you encounter an enemy you are moved to a battlefield where you lead your men to battle in which each of the sides uses their abilities alternately.

The game starts 60 seconds before the first explosion, giving you one minute to get to a shelter while grabbing the most essential provisions on the way.
