An economic real-time strategy game created by British indie developer Introversion Software. Prison Architect lets you play as a headmaster of a penal facility. Your duties include designing a high-security prison, managing its budged, and providing for the needs of inmates. The authors saw to it that each prisoner had his individual personality and corresponding criminal inclinations. A virtual prison manager has to face such issues as violent behavior among inmates, gang activities, smuggling and contraband, or even mutiny. Prison Architect features very simple top-down 2D graphics.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

PC

February 9, 2012

Strategy, Singleplayer, Tactics, Modern Conflicts.

A complex remake of the iconic game Jagged Alliance 2, developed by Coreplay. The game builds on a non-linear campaign that takes the players to a fictional country of Arulco ruled with an iron fist by Queen Deidranna, who came up with a scheme and deprived Enrico Chivaldori - the player’s employer - of his rightful crown. As one might easily guess, the player is tasked with ending this reign of terror and shooting the usurper down in flames. As in the original release, in Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, one leads to battle a team comprising diverse soldiers, each exhibiting a unique set of features and abilities that are developed through the experience they gain on the battlefields; one might also boost their performance with new weapons and armors. Arulco has been divided into 50 sectors waiting to be conquered - often, a player has to throw himself at the mercy of the natives, who can offer some help or strengthen and join the team. In comparison to the original release, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action features not only refreshed visuals, but also a number of improvements - the most prominent being the abandonment of a turn-based system in favor of real-time combat. This new system requires the players to plan the actions for multiple characters at the same time. Moreover, the players get at their disposal a wide range of commands, with which they can order their soldiers to climb, crawl, and aim at specific enemies’ body parts.

The third standalone expansion for Men of War, a real-time strategy game. Similarly to the vanilla game and its two previous add-ons, it was developed by Best Way. This time around, the players can take part in the Vietnam War, fought in years 1955-1975 by US-backed South Vietnam and North Vietnam, supported in turn by the Communist Bloc. Both sides of the conflict have their separate story campaigns. The missions we have to complete include rescuing American prisoners, taking over important strategic points, and eliminating enemy officers. The title also lets us participate in historical events, such as ambushes on the Ho Chi Minh trail or defending a bridge during the Tet Offensive. Men of War: Vietnam gives the players control of a squad of several specialized units, while the gameplay itself is focused mostly on performing silent and precise missions.

Transport Fever is an economic strategy by a Swiss studio, Urban Games. The previous game by this team was Train Fever, released in 2014. Contrary to that title, in Transport Fever the developers decided to offer not only land-based transport management, but aerial and marine transport as well. The goal of this game hasn't changed however - it still is about developing an efficient transport network connecting different locations, and allowing smooth transportation of goods and passengers. In Transport Fever players need to design routes and railways, erect strategic buildings such as railway stations, airports, and docking bays. The network has to be maintained and upgraded to meet the increasing demands of the market. The whole transport empire is strictly dependent on the economy; the game requires a reasonable management of the funds.

In Star Wars: Empire at War – Forces of Corruption players get an entirely new faction at their disposal, which is at war with both the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. The aforementioned faction, called the Underworld Organization, is able to spy and sabotage hostile factions e.g. by limiting their unit production. In the story campaign, we can assume control of the armies of four sides of the conflict: humans (Space Marines), Orks, the Eldar, and the Tyranids. Contrary to its predecessor, in Dawn of War II we have a much larger freedom in terms of playing and can determine the order of conquest. Moreover, every mission ends with a fight against a so-called boss who is more resistant to damage and has more powerful attacks at his disposal. In the title, we command units that usually consist of only several troops, which serves to strengthen the tactical side of the gameplay and the way players bond with their subordinates. As we progress, the experience level of our armies also rise, thanks to which they can perform increasingly better on the battlefield.

In the strategic mode you plan your next move, complete research and develop technology, as well as manufacture gear and weapons – all this in real time. When it comes to skirmishes with the aliens, combat is turn-based. Most missions are procedurally generated, which relates to greater replayability. Mechanics-wise, Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy is a 3D tactical space strategy, but compared to its strictly turn-based predecessor, the game is played in the WeGo system - the player gives orders to their units and observes the effects afterwards in real time, still being able to modify the orders in the active pause mode. Several classes of spaceships are at the player's disposal, offering different weaponry and roles to be fulfilled in combat. Different factors influence the course of the battle, such as reconnaissance, selection of units and tactics, or caring for the soldiers' morale.

A real time strategy in a medieval fantasy setting developed by Haemimont Games studio. Tzar: The Burden of the Crown takes place in a land of Keanor, which is ruled by the Dark Lord and his minions after the death of king Roan. We play as the son of the latter, prince Sartor, raised by a wizard to defeat the evil and restore his kingdom to its former glory. Gameplay takes a lot from typical RTS titles, like the classic Warcraft series. We must develop our domain and add new structures, along with gathering resources and reinforcing our army before facing an enemy. The play style differs depending on which faction we play as (Europeans, Arabs or Asians) and which path we choose (The Way of Warriors, The Way of Magic, The Way of Religion or The Way of Trade and Crafts).

Another installment in the popular series of economy strategy games developed cooperatively by Related Designs, the creators of the franchise, and the legendary Blue Byte studio under the watchful eye of Ubisoft. The fifth entry in the series, contrary to the previous ones, takes the players to the future, to the eponymous year of 2070, when climatic changes drastically raised water levels around the world, forcing humankind to move to higher ground. The gameplay mechanics use a number of characteristic solutions of the series but not without several novelties. A grand ship, called the Ark, is our base of operations that can be upgraded with each completed mission. There are three different factions to choose from, each possessing a different development tree. The first one offers advanced industry and aggressive expansion possibilities, the second focuses primarily on environmental protection, while the third one emphasizes modern technologies. The available game modes include a classical single player campaign, continuous mode as well as co-op and competitive multiplayer modes.

A fantasy turn-based strategy game inspired by such series as Heroes of Might & Magic and Disciples. Eador: Masters of the Broken World takes place in the titular world which has fallen apart into numerous pieces scattered across the whole galaxy. Each piece is ruled by a different ruler. The player assumes the role of one of such rulers, embarking on a quest to defeat the rivals and unite all the lands. The action has several layers: in the global layer one decides about conquering new lands and researching technologies; on the strategy map one can manage cities, build armies and attack settlements. The battles take place on rather small tactical maps and the key to victory is to use the advantages of units, commanders’ abilities and the shape of the surface.

An official expansion for the 2009's economic strategy Anno 1404, which is the fourth installment in the series launched more than a decade earlier by the Max Design studio. The add-on features the titular Venetian culture and with it the new merchant ships, the possibility to sabotage opponent's progress, and the institution of city council, which can be manipulated and bribed in order to take control of a foreign metropolis without bloodshed. Moreover, Anno 1404: Venice offers in total three hundred entirely new missions like economic race or loading of ships, sixty additional items, as well as the opportunity to discover and explore previously inaccessible kind of territory – a volcanic island. The biggest novelty is a multiplayer mode for up to 4 people, that was absent in the base game. Players can now compete against each other or form alliances against an opponent controlled by the computer.
