The third major installment in a cult RTS franchise created and developed under the watchful eye of the Microsoft company. Contrary to the previous editions, which were set in ancient and medieval times, this one lets you witness centuries-long conquest of America, spanning from 16th to 19th century. Because of its wider time frame and a setting much closer to modern times, the game lets you command both medieval units, as well as more recent technical advancements. The developers brought back the well-proven mechanics, with an addition of some new elements. Core gameplay is an extensive story campaign depicting a blend of facts and fictional events. In multiplayer you can command one of eight playable nations, each one having its own, unique features. Additionally the game can boast impressive 3D graphics created using the Havok physics engine.

A science fiction economic strategy game developed by Haemimont Games and published by Paradox Interactive. The title is a city builder in which the player must design the first human settlement on Mars. Being a manager of a space colony requires the player to take care of many matters - the survival and well being of the colony inhabitants depend on it. The colonists won’t survive for long without access to oxygen and water, and the advanced technology of the colony requires a steady supply of energy. What makes things even harder is the fact that the systems constructed by the player can be broken by environmental conditions: the water tanks can freeze and the solar panels can be deactivated by a sandstorm. Additionally, the agency that sponsored the whole mission has specific requirements – if the player had chosen a profit-driven corporation as a sponsor, then he must remember to create a mine for valuable resources and a system that will transport these resources to Earth. Each inhabitant of the colony is a unique character with specific traits and parameters impacted by his living conditions. A happy colonist can decide to have children while a constantly stressed worker will grow psychical traumas. The title is a sandbox which is partially unpredictable due to the mysteries – events and scenarios inspired by classic science fiction tropes.

The third entry in the ground-breaking real-time strategy game series, this time calling back to the very first game from 1995. The game itself, however, takes us to the beginning of 21st century and once again puts us in charge of the weakened Nod Brotherhood or GDI alliance that tries to maintain the world peace under the command of General Salomon. Despite what we could have thought, the charismatic leader of Nod did not die under the ruins of his temple and is quick to begin a new conflict, which can change the world forever. Gameplay of Tiberian Sun doesn’t differ much from the original, though the creators from Westood studio made sure to implement some changes and novelties. Each faction has new buildings and units that force us to develop new tactics. There also additions like new, three-dimensional game engine, improved cutscenes with well-known actors (including James Earl Jones and Michael Biehn) and enhanced multiplayer for up to 8 players.

A complex remake of the iconic game Jagged Alliance 2, developed by Coreplay. The game builds on a non-linear campaign that takes the players to a fictional country of Arulco ruled with an iron fist by Queen Deidranna, who came up with a scheme and deprived Enrico Chivaldori - the player’s employer - of his rightful crown. As one might easily guess, the player is tasked with ending this reign of terror and shooting the usurper down in flames. As in the original release, in Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, one leads to battle a team comprising diverse soldiers, each exhibiting a unique set of features and abilities that are developed through the experience they gain on the battlefields; one might also boost their performance with new weapons and armors. Arulco has been divided into 50 sectors waiting to be conquered - often, a player has to throw himself at the mercy of the natives, who can offer some help or strengthen and join the team. In comparison to the original release, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action features not only refreshed visuals, but also a number of improvements - the most prominent being the abandonment of a turn-based system in favor of real-time combat. This new system requires the players to plan the actions for multiple characters at the same time. Moreover, the players get at their disposal a wide range of commands, with which they can order their soldiers to climb, crawl, and aim at specific enemies’ body parts.

An upgraded version of the bestselling 1998 RTS game. Both versions were developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Compared to the original release, the game (including the Brood War expansion) features mainly significantly improved audiovisuals. Although the visuals remain two-dimensional, all the graphic elements have become more detailed. Furthermore, the game supports high resolutions (up to 4K), as well as refreshed audio, which also applies to dialogues between characters. Changes were introduced to the game's online component as well - StarCraft: Remastered offers an advanced system of matchmaking, the option to store one's save files in the cloud, quick button re-mapping, and easy access to fan-made maps and replays. The mechanics remain unchanged - the game is a classic RTS, featuring three playable races (the Terrans, the Protoss, and the Zerg). The gameplay is based on gathering resources, building one's base, conducting research, producing units, and fighting enemies - in combat, taking advantage of both the enemy's weak spots and the strong spots of the player's forces, constitutes the key to success. Apart from six story campaigns (two for each of the races), the game offers an extensive multiplayer component with various game modes.

An official expansion for the second installment in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth series. It requires the basic version of the game to work. The Rise of the Witch-King expansion takes place between the War of the Last Alliance and the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring. This time the developers decided to be more creative and the game tells about the events that J.R.R. Tolkien described rather sparsely. The story of the expansion concentrates on the Witch-king of Angmar whose objective is to conquest the kingdoms of Arnor. The player assumes the role of the titular character and he must build power of his army and participate in the great conquests for the glory of Sauron. The gameplay in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II: The Rise of the Witch-King doesn’t differ from the one used in the basic version of the game. However, the expansion offers completely new units (including Thrall Masters and Dark Dunedains) which can be used both during the story campaign and in skirmishes and multiplayer modes. Siege engines appear on the battlefield as well. In addition to that, the races from the basic version of the game received some new units and the AI behavior was greatly improved. The process of character creation has become much clearer and more intuitive.

Similarly as in the majority of real-time strategies, the essence of the game is leading troops during combat. Thanks to the unique setting and various futuristic weapons, the battles are spectacular and very brutal. The game lacks the typical resource gathering element, usually used for improving the base. Instead, the resource system was based on conquering and controlling key locations. The way how units look is worth mentioning – they are based on authentic figurines created by Games Workshop.

A turn-based strategy game set in a science fiction universe, and a debut project from Tetragon Works. Phantom Brigade throws you into a country that gets attacked and overrun by another nation. You play as a leader of the resistance, trying to reclaim his homeland from the invaders' hands. Most of the in-game time is spent on giving orders to a small squads of mechs, performing all sorts of missions. Phantom Brigade’s campaign is very dynamic. On the world’s map you can select which targets or territories to attack next, while taking under consideration the fact that resources that you gain or lose have direct impact on how the entire conflict enfolds. Each mech under your command can be upgraded and customized, thus increasing its combat effectiveness. However, even the most powerful mech is useless without a pilot, therefore, a key to success is protecting your men from taking damage, while forcing enemy pilots to leave their machines.

A refreshed version of Age of Empires, a real-time strategy game that debuted in 1997. Microsoft, the company responsible for the new version, focused not only on improving the graphics so that they now support 4K resolution, but on recording a new version of the symphonic soundtrack as well. The title contains the contents of the basic version of the original game and of the Rise of Rome expansion pack. The single player scenarios were expanded with new narrative features. In Age of Empires: Definitive Edition the player is leading civilizations from various regions of the world to war. The gameplay is focused on expanding the base, obtaining resources, recruiting army and participating in dynamic battles. A modernized interface makes controlling the battlefield easier. In addition to single player modes, the title offers multiplayer mode based on Xbox Live.
