When the artifact that has prevented the waters from flooding the metropolis looses its power, the inhabitants of Katta Castrum request help from the heroes of Norrath. The expansion pack brings new story-based quests, side missions, additional items, abilities and spells for one's character, but also introduces different changes and improvements into the mechanics. Above all, the players can now establish their own brotherhoods - particular members can talk to one another in separate chat channels, as well as relocate to where the others are. Furthermore, guilds can be equipped with unique banners, serving the role of fast-travel destination points. As usual, The Buried Sea expansion is powered by improved technology of the core EverQuest.

The game takes us to a classic fantasy world, which is at war against evil that has invaded this world through a gate of Abyss, sealed centuries ago. Players take the role of a character belonging to one of six classes and fight for survival in hostile environment, in which the only law is the law of the sword. Gameplay doesn’t strand much from genre’s standards, as we mainly explore, fight monsters, and complete quests to gather experience necessary to develop our character and gain successively better equipment. We can also cooperate and trade with other players. The game stands out mainly due to a rather high amount of brutality and unrefined language used by NPC traders.
