The sixth installment of the popular FPS series developed by MED-Art, a Russian developer studio. The players assume the role of Bill Sherman, a character from Painkiller: Resurrection. The protagonist fights bloody battles against hellish forces, using a rich and sophisticated arsenal in the process as well as the ability to transform into a demon after collecting a certain amount of souls. Skillful use of the hero’s combat potential is the key to be victorious, for there are vast hordes of lesser enemies as well as powerful bosses in our way. Five new locations were created for the purposes of Painkiller: Recurring Evil – battles take place in a gloomy abbey and a jungle-swallowed temple complex, among other places. The production is powered by PainEngine, which was also used in the original Painkiller released almost eight years before. Nevertheless, the developers introduced several improvements so that the graphics aren’t too painful to look at.

The mechanics are based on such classic productions as Metroid and Castlevania, focusing on the exploration of the open world, and combat, in which you use spears, swords, and shields; the game also features stealth sequences. From time to time, you have to fight a god, and upon defeating them, you gain their powers. The unusual visuals of the game were inspired by ancient ceramic paintings. The production features a single player mode and a tactical multi-player mode.

In the game the player isn’t a member of any of these houses. Instead, he belongs to one of the lesser houses and he can decide which side of the conflict he will join. The game focuses mostly on PvP mode in which the player fights other players. The combat system is very action based – reflex and a good tactical sense are required for victory. Later in the game the player also participates in giant battles and sieges of strongholds, the conquering of which provides access to resources and tax income.
