First huge add-on to the tactical strategy game, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, released in 2012. Created by the developer team at Firaxis Games, the expansion introduces many new features to basic game. One of the most important among them is a new resource – meld, a type of microscopic, robotic organisms that can modify human genotype. This allows humans to improve their body and even integrate mechanical parts into themselves. The add-on introduces a new soldier class as well – Mec Trooper - along with a special building to “produce” him, two types of aliens (Seeker and Mechtoid) and a new human organization, EXALT, trying to use alien technology to conquer the world. There are also new types of weapons, skills, and maps for multiplayer matches.

A real-time strategy and a spiritual successor to Act of War, a game released in 2005. The game was created by a French developer Eugen Systems, also known for titles like R.U.S.E. and the Wargame franchise. The story is set in the near future, where the player commands a special, top secret task force created by the UN in order to quietly deal with potential threats to the world peace. The gameplay mechanics feature typical RTS premises: before invading an enemy territory you have to expand your base and recruit an army, while keeping a steady flow of resources. Since the game is set in the future, it features lots of futuristic military equipment, including ground and aerial vehicles. Apart from the extensive single player campaign, the game features multiplayer options as well.

A continuation to the humorous fantasy action RPG from 2011. The production was made by the Swedish studio Pieces Interactive, which previously worked on one of the add-ons to the prequel. The action is set in the world of Midgard, in which almost all wizards were killed during a great war. The survivors are a motley crew of crazy and somewhat quirky characters who must join forces to fight another epic battle against evil. The player controls one of them, having access to a wide range of magic, as well as the power to control the elements, which allows him or her to create new devastating spells that may have different effect on different opponents. In the second part, the game introduces special artifacts that can modify the gameplay. Thanks to them, the missions can have varying outcomes. Similarly to its predecessor, the game focuses on cooperation.

You play as the head of a typical American family, who has to provide for his loved ones in the face of an incoming nuclear war. The game starts 60 seconds before the first explosion, giving you one minute to get to a shelter while grabbing the most essential provisions on the way. In the next phase you have to survive for as long as you can using only the resources you've managed to gather, which often force you to make very tough decisions. Sometimes, you have to decide whose daily rations should be reduced, sometimes how to deal with problems at hand, such as a cockroach infestation. Despite its seemingly grim theme, the game features a rather light-hearted atmosphere, evident e.g. in its comic-like graphics.

In Worms WMD, the basic gameplay principles remain unchanged, and the players still have to eliminate the opposite team using a number of more or less unconventional weapons. The participants make their moves in turns and their actions are limited by a time limit. The game refers to the initial two-dimensional installments of the series, which means that battles are presented from the classical side view. The title does not lack for several enriching novelties, though. These include the possibility to hide inside buildings and to use vehicles that allow us to traverse the battlefield and deal damage to the enemy. Visually, the production features the characteristic cartoonish visual style, although the worms’ appearance and animation were refreshed.

The combat system combines tactical options like active pause with solutions known from action games, including physics-based attacks – the enemies can be thrown down from a cliff or knocked to the ground with a strong hit of a hammer. Before each mission, the player selects a team consisting of four characters, each of which has unique story and abilities. The action is shown from an isometric perspective and the most important events are presented as cutscenes.

A turn-based strategy game, with RPG and simulation elements, developed by Microprose. The story of UFO: Enemy Unknown takes place in an alternate reality of the year 1999, where the players take on the role of the leader of X-COM, an organization created to prevent potential alien threats. When reports from many corners of the world come in about numerous missing people, terrorized cities and hideous genetic experiments - X-COM soldiers have to move in. There are two fundamental aspects of gameplay: the economical one, where we manage the budget of the organization, build bases and outfit them with the necessary equipment. We also determine the direction of scientific research; and the strategic one, where we detect and shoot down UFOs and send soldiers to mop up the remaining aliens.

A controversial action game developed by the Scotch studio DMA Design. The game takes place in three American cities, based on Miami, New York and San Francisco. The objective of the game is to complete various missions received from mafia bosses. At first the missions are simple (for example, stealing cars), but as player’s reputation increases, the objectives become more complicated and player starts participating in bank robberies, murders and other insolent crimes. The action is shown from a top-down perspective and the game gives complete freedom to the player in terms of exploring the city and preferred means of travel – both in order to complete the mission and to escape from the police. The protagonist gradually becomes more drastic, and the game very brutal. For this reason the game was banned in some countries.

An economic game that is an excellent extension of the idea started with Railroad Tycoon. This time, however, we are going to deal not only with rail transport, but also with sea, car and air transport.
