PS5 Overheating With Second SSD? Sony Wants to Improve Cooling

Sony may soon make it possible to install an additional SSD into the PlayStation 5. According to Bloomberg, the new firmware will speed up fan operation due to the possibility of console overheating when a second drive is installed.

The times when half a terabyte was enough space for dozens of games are long gone. Yes, there are some extremely small games (mostly indies), but more and more big-budget titles can take up well over 50 or even 100GB of space. In this context, the PlayStation 5's actual 667GB of storage capacity leaves a lot to be desired, especially as external media only works with 8th-gen games. However, that could change in the summer, as Bloomberg reports that Sony is preparing firmware that will enable us to connect an additional SSD. The new PlayStation has room for a second drive, but you can't currently use that slot (which was announced a year ago, by the way). If Bloomberg's reports are to be believed, the reason is concerns about the PS5 overheating when a second SSD is connected. That's why the upcoming firmware will boost fan speeds to prevent temperature spikes. Unfortunately, a side effect of this could be a louder console.

As of yet, Bloomberg's information has not been officially confirmed. Sony still assures us that it's working on expanding the console's SSD storage, but withholds specific dates. It's hardly surprising, given that the company still has a major problem with PS5's availability, thanks in part to scalpers who continue to trouble gamers (although some of themm are paying back in kind). Unfortunately, recent reports suggest the situation won't even improve until the end of this year.
