The game, designed exclusively for one player, consists in building various constructions of gelatinous slurry balls, i.e. the title Goo, which is permanently disturbed by gravity and other laws of physics. The title, characterized by specific visual setting and original situational humour, was considered one of the most original games of 2008.

The player assumes the role of the titular Wonder Boy – a caveman whose girlfriend was kidnapped by the Dark King. The protagonist attempts to rescue Tina while trying to take care of the villain. The gameplay of Wonder Boy Returns features traveling through various levels, jumping between platforms and fighting enemies like bees, spiders and penguins.

While playing, we assume the role of the eponymous hero whose task is to find his lost mother. The path to his goal is a bumpy one because his mother, a lady scientist who deals with color research, got lost somewhere in a monochromatic world. In the game, we traverse vast, single-colored maps, avoiding various obstacles and solving puzzles based mostly on color manipulation.
