Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

The eleventh major installment of the popular jRPG series by Square Enix. The action of Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time takes place in a fantastical land of Lotozetasia, while the player assumes the role of a inhabitant of the Ishi village. On his 16th birthday, he discovers that he is an incarnation of a hero who saved the world from annihilation many years ago. Since then, the youngster’s life takes a radical turn, and his further fate is uncertain. Accompanied by loyal friends, the protagonist embarks on a journey which will seal his destiny. The production is very sandbox — at its core are exploration of the environment, conversing with non-player characters, and performing quests given by them. Turn-based combat is an integral part of the gameplay. To win a battle, we have to adequately develop our character and adjust our equipment accordingly.

Another installment in the popular Nintendo series about Pokémon, released as a pair of games: Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. The action takes place in French-like region Kalos. You assume the role of a young Pokémon trainer traveling through the world in search of new creatures you catch and train for Pokémon League battles. To be successful you need to earn eight Gym Badges by defeating the Battle Arenas’ leaders specialized in different elements. Then, you will have to prove your strength to the so-called Elite Four – the best trainers in Kalos. Game mechanics do not differ significantly from the previous installments. The core aspects of Pokemon X are still world exploration, chatting, and battling others with Pokémon of different abilities and techniques. Pokémon X and Y are the first in the series to utilize fully 3D graphics.

The second installment in a series of jRPGs enriched with elements typical for visual novels and dungeon crawlers. This time, the player assumes the role of a chosen character (several available) and their goal is to defeat the monsters lurking in the Pandora Labyrinth. The gameplay resembles the formula used in the original game - the player explores randomly generated dungeons, talks to seven female companions (as well as asks them out on dates) and fights the enemies encountered. Once again, the so-called Star Children accompany the player in combat, offering their unique abilities as a form of support. The game is played from a third-person view and the player can both avoid encounters with enemies and attack them by surprise. Similar to the previous installment, one can buy new parts of equipment in town. The visuals are decent here and resemble anime productions.

The visuals of RPG Maker FES are inspired by classic 16-bit productions, which makes it not too demanding hardware-wise.

Another spin-off in the popular series of dungeon crawlers, Etrian Odyssey, developed by Spike Chunsoft. The player assumes the role of an adventurer, who helps an unfamiliar woman in reaching the roots of the Yggdrasil tree, which is told to hide a gate to the world of gods. The events in Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 are presented from an isometric perspective, and a significant portion of gameplay is about exploration of randomly generated dungeons as well as fighting turn-based battles. Interestingly, both heroes and their adversaries perform actions at the same time – therefore, when you move from one field to another, the enemy may be performing the same action. You take under your command a team of four adventurers, whom you can hire and replace in a town, which serves the role of your base of operation. In the course of the adventure the heroes gain experience and learn new skills as well as class-based special abilities. It is also noteworthy that upon dying the characters go back to the town, however, they also lose the entire equipment and gold they carried. Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2’s characteristic feature is its colorful, eye-pleasing graphics.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Another installment in the bestselling jRPG series which has been in development since the mid-80s. It is the first game in the franchise to be available for PlayStation 2. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is set in a well-known fantasy universe. The player controls a party of adventurers who have to stop the evil Dhoulmagus and remove the curse he placed on the king and his daughter. As we progress, the protagonists gain new abilities and items and become stronger. In combat, played in a turn-based system, they use not only typical medieval weaponry but also magic. They also encounter friendly NPCs with whom they can trade and talk. Visually, Dragon Quest VIII resembles Dark Cloud 2: it has three-dimensional graphics combined with cel shading rendering which gives them cartoonish looks. The characters' were designed by a famous mangaka, Akira Toriyama, known primarily for his work on the Dragon Ball franchise.

The titles included in the Dragon Fantasy: The Volumes of Westeria edition take the player to the eponymous Westeria continent, where evil spreads its influence and two nations are warring for domination. The story is split into chapters, each featuring a different protagonist – actions of these heroes have significant impact on this world’s situation. The Dragon Fantasy series combines solutions typical of the classic representatives of the jRPG genre, such as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, with a daring sense of humor characteristic of EarthBound. Apart from many adventures, conversations with non-player characters, and battles fought with randomly spawned opponents, the game could not miss out on a character progression system. Along with the story progression your heroes are gaining progressively better weapons and armor, as well as and more powerful spells. When it comes to audiovisuals, the games in the Dragon Fantasy series offer old-school graphics and retro sounds, resembling 8- and 16-bit titles.

The game is set in the distant future, where a powerful cataclysm forced the remaining inhabitants to flee into space on steam space ships. The player becomes a captain of a group of robo-pirates who are trying to survive in this post-apocalyptic reality by raiding and plundering enemy bases and ships. SteamWorld Heist is a turn-based science-fiction game with movement points system (when a character performs an action they use up movement points). You control a party of antiheroes who use various weapons, gadgets, and special skills. The key to success is to appropriately use the different skills and combine various combat tactics, depending on the situation.

Another entry in the tactical jRPG series that has been developed since 1990, as well as the second game for the Nintendo 3DS console to be made by Intelligent System. Its story is divided into two paths: Hoshido and Nohr, each available in one version – Birthright and Conquest. Both let us play in a fantasy world as Corrin (default name of the main hero or heroine) a member of one of the titular factions. Gameplay focuses on exploring the land and turn-based battles. As we progress with the plot, we gather experience points and develop our character. While Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright is a full-scale sequel, players who want to learn the whole story should also buy the Conquest edition, available with a discount as add-on.

A tactical turn-based jRPG with surprising plot. The game was developed by Altair Works. The player leads an uprising of slimes that usually serve as a cannon fodder in such games. Decimated creatures discovered that they can control human bodies and they intend to take advantage of this ability. The gameplay in Ambition of the Slimes focuses on turn-based battles that take place on a tactical map. The fights are strongly unusual due to the abilities of the slimes. The control over human warriors can work in various ways – some slimes increase the statistics of the bodies they control, other are able to teleport or take over even the strongest foes. This makes the battles very varied and frequently requiring a tactical approach.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a spin-off of the popular jRPG series Etrian Odyssey from the Spike Chunsoft studio, a Nintendo handheld video game series. The plot plays a secondary role in Etrian Mystery Dungeon. We play as a group of adventurers who arrive in Aslarga, a town located near the titular labyrinth. The game uses the same formula and gameplay mechanics as other installments of the series. We have a team of ten heroes, each of them representing one of the ten classes and professions known from Etrian Odyssey. Each location we enter is generated procedurally. We observe the game from an isometric point of view. Gameplay focuses on dungeon exploration and turn-based combat. Unlike in similar games of the genre, all heroes and monsters in Etrian Mystery Dungeon move and take part in action at the same time, forcing players to have a good strategy and predict the enemy movement in order to achieve victory.

The fifth full-fledged installment in a series of classic turn-based jRPGs developed by Atlus for Nintendo's hand-held consoles. The action takes place in the mysterious land of Arcadia. It is inhabited by four races - the game features original interpretations of the typical fantasy races. In terms of gameplay mechanics, it is a first-person dungeon crawler. The player assembles a team of characters representing various classes. The party visits labyrinths, descends into subsequent dungeons filled with traps, enemies and puzzles. Solving them open the way further. The game offers a turn-based combat system. The characters can perform standard attacks, cast spells and use their special abilities. As usual, the player decides about the character development and teaches the party members new skills with the experience points earned as the game progresses progression.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is an original mix of action game and a turn-based strategy developed by the Japanese studio Intelligent Systems. The game is set in a steampunk world. Action in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M takes place in the 19th century London invaded by aggressive creatures from outer space. During our adventures we control a four-person unit of soldiers which is a part of the elite S.T.E.A.M formation. Our job is to fend off the invaders. Combat is turn-based. In battle, we have to wisely manage our resources and rely on tactical actions, like flanking or ambushing our enemies. As we play, our soldiers get more powerful equipment, making them more effective in combat. We observe the action from a third-person perspective, just like in many action games. The game features fully-3D visuals.
