Pokken Tournament DX is an improved version of the Wii U game Pokken Tournament. In terms of gameplay mechanics, the game in topic is not much different from most popular 3D fighting games. Pokken Tournament DX offers over 20 pokemon from both the old and new installments of the main RPG series. Each of them has its own unique fight style and combo attacks. The game introduces one new pokemon that was not available in its 2016 version, Decidueye. In addition to that, the developers introduced two new game modes, Team Battle and Group Match Mode. The game also introduces a Battle replay system – we can record our matches and post them online. Pokken Tournament DX makes a good use of Switch’s unique functions and allows us to play in both handheld and stationary modes.

A Japanese fighting game from the popular Guilty Gear series, originally started in 1998. The game was co-developed by Arc System Works and Daisuke Ishiwatari who has not only directed the game’s development, but also composed the soundtrack for the title. Guilty Gear Xrd –Revelator- is an extended edition of Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN-. The improvements change the game’s balance and fix some of the bugs. The game introduces new playable characters (now there are +20 heroes, including Sol Badguy, Johnny, Jack-O, Jam Kuradoberi, and Dizzy, to mention just a few) and new chapters to the single player campaign. The title follows the events of the previous installments – the story is developed by cut-scenes in-between battles. Guilty Gear Xrd –Revelator- features 1 vs. 1 fights, which are conducted in a classic 2D perspective, while the backgrounds and characters are created in full 3D. However, due to the cel shading technology, the game retains a comic book-like visual style. Apart from the single player campaign and single battles, players can play in arcade mode and different multiplayer modes.

The mainstay of the game are the “Dragon Missions”, where we have the opportunity to take part in the events that weren’t used in the Dragon Ball Z games up to now – for example, Goku’s adventures during his stay in the afterlife. A number of different heroes were left at our disposal – aside from the aforementioned Goku, the game roster contains Vegeta, Trunks, or Piccolo. In all, we can take control of one of forty characters, each having different attacks and special abilities. The trademark attack – Kamehameha – is also on the list. Tekken Tag Tournament 2, designed based on the sixth main entry in the series, features the option to participate in fights between two-person teams. The teams consist of fighters selected from a roster of fifty most popular characters from all Tekken games that were released across twenty years of series’ history. Soulcalibur V is an entry in a different series that is as popular as Tekken. Contrary to the Tekken series, in Soulcalibur the warriors are using melee weapons – mostly various types of swords. The main difference in comparison to the previous entries is a set of completely new playable characters, the majority of which are the descendants of well known characters (for example Patroklos and Pyrrha are children of Sophitia).

After a few years of silence, here comes yet another installment in the popular fighting series Guilty Gear developed by Arc System Works. The game’s biggest feature is the use of Unreal Engine which supports 1080p, along with 3D backgrounds and 3D character models. The latter, implemented as a modified cel-shading style, strongly resembles original, two-dimensional sprites. Mechanically, not much has changed; it is still a classic fighting title with a dynamic and difficult-to-master combat system based on combos and special attacks (which drain a special bar). Each of the 17 warriors has a different style concerning both looks and moves. The campaign tells the stories of the heroes, but nothing stops you from enjoying only e.g. arcade or multiplayer battles.

Production of this title began simultaneously with the development of Capcom's Street Fighter X Tekken, but unlike its competitor it features the mechanics and visuals of the Tekken series.
