Sports 22 December 2011

A mobile ski jumping simulator with a number of managerial features. The game, developed by Vivid Games, allows us to create a custom player from scratch and lead him through the world of ski jumping. Our duties include buying equipment and planning a workout schedule, as well as taking part in further competitions, systematically increasing our statistics. The jumping itself is quite complicated – the player has to focus on each section (inrun, take-off, flight, and landing), as the judges grade the style of the jump following these guidelines. The jumps are also affected by wind and dynamic weather conditions. Unfortunately, the game lacks the official license of ski jumping events, which leaves us with placeholder names of all participants. We are left with appealing visuals and intuitive controls employing the touch controls or built-in gyroscope.

The authors included up-to-date statistics and line-ups, a more realistic approach and an improved interface. Other novelties include the ability to hire assistants, who can relieve us from some duties, and a two-dimensional graphic engine, allowing us to follow the matches live, and modify tactics on the fly.

During the game, players choose an NBA basketball team to take charge of, and their main goal is to lead that team to the top. The centerpiece of this game is managing the team. As a manager, the player has to set the team’s tactics and sign new players, who become available gradually through subsequently unlocked (or bought for real money) card packs. After building the team, players take part in different games, trying to meet various challenges provided by the developers. In terms of technology, the game is one of the best looking, and the most complex titles available on mobile platforms.

In the beginning of the game, you create your own club, and help it win the championship through a series of victories. Matches are played out in turn-based system, in which you give commands to your players, a formula quite unusual for this genre. In each turn you can execute up to 3 actions, and every action takes a number of movement points. Despite its innovativeness, Football Tactics features typical management options as well, requiring you to take care of the club’s budget, personnel, and infrastructure, as well as player recruitment and training. As Football Tactics is an unlicensed product, it features only fictional clubs and players.

Co-developed by n-Space studies and Visual Concepts team, this is an attempt to move the popular console wrestling WWE series onto the screens of mobile devices. In terms of content, the game does not deviate significantly from what we have come to expect from full-blown installments of the series: we can play the part of one of the great independent wrestling stars, each of which has its own range of unique attacks and moves, as well as a specific way of entering the ring, warming up the atmosphere before the fight. In addition to the traditional career mode and on-line multiplayer, a mode called Create-a-Superstar was also added, in which we create from scratch our own star of the ring and run it through subsequent rungs of the wrestling way to the top. Compared with the editions of PCs and consoles, WWE 2K above all differs with the level of graphic fidelity and with a simplified control model, adapted to mobile devices.
