This time, the player assumes the role of a chosen character (several available) and their goal is to defeat the monsters lurking in the Pandora Labyrinth. The gameplay resembles the formula used in the original game - the player explores randomly generated dungeons, talks to seven female companions (as well as asks them out on dates) and fights the enemies encountered.

Trails of Cold Steel II begins a month after the events depicted in the first installment. The civil war in Erebonia began for good. Rean's goals are to find the remaining students from the Seventh Grade, as well as to put an end to the bloody conflict, which has torn the protagonist's native country apart.
