Unturned is a sandbox MMO game that combines the mechanics of the popular DayZ mod with the visual style of Minecraft. The game is distributed for free and was created by a sixteen year old teenager – Nelson Sexton. The game takes place in an open world overrun by a zombie epidemic and forces the player into a fight for survival in this dangerous environment. Just like other, similar games, the main part of the gameplay is resource-gathering-oriented exploration. With the resources, and using the crafting system, player can create various useful tools, build vehicles that make moving easier, and construct buildings providing shelter. During the game, player must be wary of his hunger and thirst levels as well as infections. Depending on the server type, online game can focus on rivalry or cooperation between players. In both modes the players have access to large number of weapons and equipment.

A survival strategy game set in a post-apocalyptic reality. The game was created as a result of cooperation between the independent studio, Unicube, and Team 17, the company famous for the Worms series. The player becomes a leader of a group of survivors hiding in a gloomy underground shelter after a nuclear catastrophe. The game begins when the first bombs are about to fall. We have a limited amount of time to gather supplies for the first weeks of living underground. Later in the game, the player is forced to leave the shelter looking for food, water, medicines, and other supplies. The player often has to fight hungry mutants and other survivors, as well as face other problems, for example those related to the maintenance of the shelter. The player also has to deal with various diseases and the mental condition of the survivors. The game features retro pixel-art graphics, accompanied by a soundtrack that resembles B-Class movie stylistics.

Survival sandbox FPP game prepared by the creator of one of the most popular Source engine modifications – Garry Newman and his Facepunch Studios. The game’s universe is inspired by titles like DayZ and S.T.A.L.K.E.R., featuring large open world, where your character struggles for survival. In terms of gameplay mechanics Rust was modeled after sandbox games like Minecraft. The in-game character gets hungry, cold, tired, and in need of shelter, and the primary goal is to provide for his basic needs, which boils down to collecting items and employing the game's advanced crafting system. Depending on your preferences, you can either play alone, focusing on survival aspect, or in multiplayer, where you get to cooperate and compete with other players, motivated by their own goals and needs.

Darkwood is the first commercial project of a Polish studio, Acid Wizard, and its development has been backed up by users voting on the Steam Greenlight platform. The game takes place in a procedurally generated open world, with the player placed in the role of a character trying to survive the confrontations with supernatural beings without losing his sanity in the eponymous dark wood. During a day, the protagonist must find or construct items, which will help him fend off evil entities at night. The gameplay is relatively difficult, combining features of an action game, adventure game, and a cRPG. Simple, two-dimensional visuals are dominated by semidarkness and dark shapes, and the terrifying atmosphere is further bolstered with disturbing audio.

This is the debut production from Axolot Games. The game itself is a multiplayer-focused sandbox mechanic simulator featuring elements of survival. The player takes control of a mechanic sent to a fully automatized agricultural planet to fix and maintain the machines working there. As it soon turns out, the robots inhabiting the planet went insane and the protagonist's task is to make a good use of his knowledge of machines in order to survive the attacks of mechanical enemies. Scrap Mechanic offers two completely different game modes: survival and creative mode. The latter offers pure entertainment and allows us to build machines without having to bother ourselves with threats. The survival mode resembles games such as Rust or Hurtworld, focusing on exploration, resources gathering, building different machines for various purposes, fighting, and cooperating with other players.

A standalone expansion for the 2013’s well-received survival sandbox game, Don’t Starve. The main goal of the add-on is to transfer the core premise of the original title into cooperative multiplayer gameplay. In the game, we still explore the world, gather food, build a shelter, fight various enemies, and take care of the protagonist’s physical and mental health. The primary novelty is the possibility of interacting with other players who can turn out to be either precious friends or deadly foes. Don’t Starve Together allows us to play both with our friends and with complete strangers. Another appeal of the expansion is the fact that it comes with the previously released DLC, Reign of Giants, which expands the original title with new bioms, enemies, and a full year cycle. The production can be obtained free of charge by all owners of the vanilla game.

The title was created by an independent studio Compulsion Games known for creating Contrast, a title that used similar style. In the game, the player travels to a fictional town in which, due to indoctrination and a wonderful drug, the citizens are constantly happy and all traits of dissatisfaction are immediately eliminated. The protagonist is one of the defiant citizens who are resistant to the system. In order to survive in the surrounding world, he must observe it thoroughly and understand its rules. The action is shown from first-person perspective and the gameplay is focused on exploration, and gathering various items and using them. While doing it, players must behave according to the social norms so that other citizens don’t become suspicious. The world of the game was characteristically exaggerated, but the game tells about many very important topics.

The game’s protagonist is a woman named Scout, who, together with her dog, follows a long river in search of a rescue awaiting at the river’s far end. The game’s world is inspired by typical American landscapes, such as national parks, the Mississippi Delta, or Bayou. In order to survive, you have to acquire food and look out for the protagonist’s health. If she suffers injuries, you have to treat her with bandages and herbs; spending some time in a shelter, where the character can rest and regain strength, would also be a good idea. Gameplay is supplemented with a crafting system, allowing you to combine the items you find into useful tools. The game features atmospheric, cartoonish graphics, and soundtrack composed by highly regarded alternative musician Chuck Regan.

The protagonists (you can choose from Abby, Jack or Kenji) need to rely on their determination and survival skills in this hostile environment. The gameplay of How to Survive features an open structure, giving you much freedom in the way you decide to complete the quests. There is a strong focus on survival aspects — the characters need to gather food and water, and also rest between battles with the undead. A simple crafting system allows you to create your own armor and useful items.

The game presents a hilarious approach to first-person shooters, as it focuses on depicting and satirizing the customs of high society gentlemen. Therefore, the player can observe robots drinking tea or smoking pipes for example. Despite being intended as a satire, the game has proper three-dimensional visuals based on an proprietary game engine, able to procedurally generate rural English landscapes.

A first-person action game that follows the convention of survival horror. Bigfoot is a debut project of an independent Ukrainian developer, CyberLight studio. As the name suggests, the game focuses on the legendary humanoid creature living deep inside the Rocky Mountains. After a group of tourists goes missing in one of the nearby national parks in, as the police say, the result of an accident, the main protagonist, accompanied by his friends, decides to go to the site and investigate the case more closely. The players are offered a vast open world, in which they can explore lakes, swamps, and creepy caves. The gameplay builds on hunting down the titular adversary. The main protagonists establish their base in an RV, and during their hunt, they use a shotgun, a wide range of traps, and some other pieces of gear. The player can confront the Sasquatch (as Native Americans call it) alone, or in a cooperative mode allowing up to three players to join their forces for the hunt.

A real-time strategy game enriched with elements of RPGs, city builders, and survival games. Ancient Cities was developed by the independent developer Uncasual Games. The player assumes the role of a tribal leader living in the Neolithic era. The tasks of the player are to provide shelter and protection against predators for the members of the tribe, as well as to obtain sufficient amounts of food. Gathering resources (the whole in-game economy is based on them) resembles a survival game, as flora and fauna are simulated within a dynamic ecosystem. Consequently, wild plants and animals are soon not enough to sustain a constantly growing tribe. In harsh periods, the player has to distribute supplies wisely - for instance, foods naturally degrade over time. Things can also get complicated as a result of sudden climatic changes and natural disasters - one oftentimes has to decide whether to stay in one's settlement and try to survive a difficult period, or to abandon the base in search for a safer zone. Alongside progression, the player unlocks new upgrades in the extensive technology tree, which allows for improvements to one's methods of crafting and cultivation, making the tribe's existence easier in the long run. Members of the tribe are described by individual sets of statistics, talents and skills. These mechanics are complemented by having more or less friendly relations with other tribes.

An action survival game developed by a Square Enix subsidiary – the development team consisted of such industry veterans as Yoji Shinkawa (the Metal Gear Solid franshise), Toshifumi Nabeshima (the Armored Core series) and Takayuki Yanase (Xenoblade Chronicles X). This game is set in the universe created for the Front Mission series. The players assume the role of three heroes trapped in a war-torn Russian city. Left Alive presents the events in the third-person perspective. As you complete consecutive missions you must fulfill diverse, non-linear objectives. An essential part of gameplay is combat – on the battlefield you get to use both firearms and self-made traps, as well as other deadly gadgets against your enemies. Alternatively, you are free to put down your guns and use a stealthy approach. Apart from enemy infantry, from time to time you must fight the so-called Wanzers, i.e. powerful mechs, iconic for the Front Mission series – interestingly, there are several occasions in the game, in which you can control one of those and strike fear in your opponents’ hearts. Other strengths of the game are high quality of graphics and atmospheric soundtrack.

A first-person perspective survival-horror game developed by Nearga. In Desolate the players assume the role of Volunteers who are sent to island Granichny to examine the paranormal activities and gather information required for removing the repercussions of a disaster that occurred there two years ago. The title can be played alone, although it becomes more interesting in four player cooperation mode.
