The second part of the science fiction first-person RPG series, created by Obsidian Entertainment. In Outer Worlds 2 we end up in the Utopia system - this is where the jump drive was invented and currently there's a faction war going on. Our choices in the game can influence the story and the world.
In 2019, Obsidian Entertainment studio created a warmly received RPG titled The Outer Worlds. This game was so well received that the developers were given the green light to prepare its sequel in the form of The Outer Worlds 2 described here.
In The Outer Worlds 2 the action is viewed from a first-person or third-person perspective (FPP/TPP). By carrying out quests that push the plot forward and side missions, we end up in various corners of the Arcadia system. We can explore them, get to know their inhabitants, fight against encountered enemies, and make decisions that influence the further course of the story and its ending.
The Outer Worlds 2 allows us to create a character with unique traits and skills, equipped with perks chosen by us. As we progress, we develop the protagonist. The key to success is selecting improvements in such a way that they complement each other and create various synergies.
The flaw system created for the first installment returns in the sequel. It makes it so that we can only gain certain enhancements at the expense of weakening the character in a specific way.
Encountered problems can be solved here in a number of ways. Even though deceit and diplomacy can be effective, they can also fail, especially since we encounter both hostile people and aggressive fauna inhabiting the locations we visit.
In such situations, we have no choice but to resort to violence. We eliminate enemies with melee and ranged weapons, engaging in dynamic open fights or acting quietly and getting rid of targets by surprise.
Although there is nothing to prevent us from exploring the colony on our own, along the way we meet characters who can join the team.
We're talking about such heroes as Niles, an agent of the Earth Directorate, a drone named Val, an assassin Marisol, a cultist Aza, a mercenary Inez, and Tristan, who is a kind of "walking tank". They have individual personalities, goals, and ambitions, and it is up to us how well we get to know and treat them.
Unlike most RPGs, The Outer Worlds 2, just like the first part of the series, lacks the option of romancing other characters. Although we can win the sympathy of certain companions or make them our enemies, no relationship finds its finale in bed. The reason for this situation, according to the creators, was the desire to use the resources needed to create this type of content to refine other elements of the game, including combat.
The Outer Worlds 2 takes us to a retrofuturistic science fiction universe, created for the needs of the original. The action of the sequel takes place not in the Halcyon system known from the "first game", but in Arcadia, which is the homeland of the jump drive. We are sent there on the orders of the Earth Directorate, and our task is to investigate the origin of the fissures threatening all of humanity.
The situation is complicated by the fact that this piece of space is torn apart by a factional war. In addition to the Protectorate carrying the care for the welfare of citizens on its banners, corporations and a religious organization also participate in it. Our fate, the result of that conflict, as well as the future of Arcadia (and consequently - all people) are shaped by our actions and choices made by us.
Although all of this sounds very serious, the game does not lack a specific humor that is one of the elements distinguishing the first installment of the series.

The Outer Worlds 2 review: Finding value in the flaws
Obsidian’s brilliant use of their flaws system in The Outer Worlds 2 makes it stand out as one of the best examples of how to encourage roleplaying in video games. Playing through this game really felt like I was breaking out of the shell that most other RPGs put me in. The world, its various factions, and characters all enhance this by encouraging you to make your own choices about who to be and what to do. Ultimately, this makes the game well worth your time, but also flawed in its own way, with occasionally frustrating combat, and a serviceable story to follow.

GameSpace: 8.5 / 10 by Mitchell Gassner
The Outer Worlds 2 may not be the most innovative RPG, but what it does, it generally does very well. A step above the original game, TOW2 is worth the price of admission if you prefer story over run and gun action.
MMORPG.com: 8.8 / 10 by Steven Weber
Despite some of the technical difficulties that required a workaround, I couldn't put The Outer Worlds 2 down. The expansive worlds, the near infinite choice options, and storytelling that is arguably some of the best in the business really encapsulates everything Obsidian has managed to do right for over two decades.
PSX Extreme: 6.9 / 10 by Sam DeLong
Western RPGs have come along way in recent years. And in a post-modern design world — one with Baulder’s Gate III and Expedition 33 — I fear that Bethesda’s designs have gotten stale and bled into other studios. It feels basic at everything with subpar writing, a weird mission structure, and combat — while good, it isn’t anything new and different.
