Dead Island 2: Are there difficulty levels?
Learn if there is an option to choose the difficulty level (normal, hard, etc.) in Dead Island 2. We also explain what are the more difficult sequences of the game and how you can decrease the challenge level with character development and better weapons.
Before starting your adventure with Dead Island 2, you might want to know whether there are different difficulty levels available. This page of the guide shows whether you can choose a difficulty level at the beginning of the campaign, as well as what potential hindrances or facilitations in the game there are.
Starting a new game

When starting a new game, only decision you can make is to choose a hero from 6 available.
You will not find any option to choose the difficulty level. The gameplay by default offers the same level of challenge for all players. You can only make incoming challenges easier by developing the hero or improving his equipment.
Bosses and deadly zombies

The difficulty level in Dead Island 2 is well balanced in our opinion. You shouldn't experience stalemates because of difficulty of the encounters and your hero shouldn't die very often. On the other hand, you need to care for the hero's development and his equipment so the fights are not too demanding or exhausting.
The most troublesome in the game are:
- Boss battles - almost every major boss is also a new type of monster. You have to learn his moveset and know how to damage him effectively. We describe the individual battles in the Bosses chapter.
- Fighting deadly zombies - they are marked with a skull icon and this informs you that the level of the monster clearly exceeds the current level of your hero. This mechanic's purpose is to create artificial blockades to restrict players from visiting certain locations. In case of encountering a skull opponent, the trick is to return later for the battle to be more even.
In the is there level scaling? page of the guide we explain the intricacies behind level scaling in the game. This feature is designed so the battles against ordinary zombies will always be a challenge.
Making the game easier through better weapons

Your character is a "wimp" at the beginning of the game, but as the campaign progresses, you'll develop your skills and get better equipment. This is done through:
- Advancing to higher experience levels - with each new level, among others, the amount of your health points is increased.
- Acquiring and upgrading weapons - during the campaign, you'll get more interesting weapons with better statistics, which can be further developed with weapon upgrades. Moreover, in the final phase of the campaign, there will be opportunities to get valuable legendary weapons.
In conclusion, completing Dead Island 2 shouldn't be that challenging, and lack of difficulty levels isn't an issue here. Combat seems difficult at the beginning, but becomes easier with new experience levels and better equipment.
