Dead Island 2: Is there open world?
Dead Island 2 is a game with a fair amount of freedom in exploring the virtual Los Angeles. Our guide informs whether the game features a fully open world, and how does unlocking and visiting new districts of the city work.
Before playing Dead Island 2, you may wonder whether the game has an open world and full freedom of exploration. We explain how does the exploration of the 10 different Los Angeles districts work and whether there are any blockades.
Game world

Dead Island 2 is set in Los Angeles, but you can't freely travel around one large map of this metropolis. The game world is divided into smaller maps that are interconnected.
The time doesn't flow smoothly in Los Angeles either, but you will visit the districts at different times of the day.
Districts

Los Angeles is divided into 10 districts and each one is a separate map:
- Bel-Air
- Hotel Halperin
- Beverly Hills
- Monarch Studios
- Sewers
- Venice Beach
- Ocean Avenue
- Santa Monica
- Metro tunnels
- Hollywood Boulevard
The next maps are discovered in a predetermined order by progressing the storyline. You can revisit previous LA districts and this often is a good chance to look into previously inaccessible places or start new side quests.
Each district has one or more exits from the zone - using an exit will load the neighboring district.

Soon after you reach the Venice Beach district for the first time during the main story, you will also unlock fast travel - using the LA map will allow you to quickly return to locations you have already visited and additionally choose the time of day.
Blockades

As you explore the maps, you may unfortunately come across various blockades that hinder exploration:
- Indestructible blockades - these can include high walls, fences, entanglements or vehicles blocking the roads. You will have to look for another path.
- Locked passages - you can unlock some of them, for example, by finding the right key or removing the lockdown in a particular base. The game can also unlock a given passage simply by advancing the main storyline.
