A 2D turn-based strategy game set in an original science-fiction universe developed by the creators of FTL: Faster Than Light. In Into the Breach the player controls small squads comprised of mech robots that protect what remains of humanity against the lurking deep underground aliens. The battles in the game take place on relatively small and procedurally-generated 2D battlefields. They are covered with 64 squares, between which both the player and their opponent can move their units. One’s objective is to defend civilian settlements against the aliens. Missions are quite short; however, they pose a considerable logic challenge and offer the players freedom in how they decide to carry them out. Moreover, the player can equip their machines with new weapons and select pilots to operate them – the pilots’ unique abilities have a significant impact on the result of each battle. The retro 2D visuals somewhat resemble what one may have experienced in FTL.

A pirate tactical action game developed by a Shanghai-based studio working under Ubisoft. Skull & Bones takes place during the golden age of piracy on the waters of the Indian Ocean. The player assumes the role of a corsair who commands his ship while gradually building up his reputation and amassing more loot. At the beginning, the player has only a single ship, but as he progresses through the game he obtains an entire fleet of various ships that differ among each other in agility, firing range, and durability. Each ship can be customized with additional parts that change its looks and combat effectiveness. The game takes place in an open world in which the player competes with artificial intelligence and with other players. During the battles it is important to take advantage of water currents, prepare proper tactics, and to cooperate with allies. It is also important to select adequate ship for the type of task the player intends to complete.

With the death of your father, you become the new leader of a small Viking village. Your objective is to strengthen your power, ensure the safety of your people, and make your village the strongest one in the area. However, your mission is threatened by hostile neighbors and conspiring members of your own clan. Apart from village management, you will be plundering and raiding, but to do so, you will have to begin with gathering the necessary resources and assembling a good crew. The combat, observed from the top view, takes place on battlefields covered in hexagon grid. The turn-based combat system allows you to come up with devious tactics. The non-linear plot of the game can be influenced by your choices, both strategic and personal.

Heavily wounded, the protagonist is plagued by visions of his past contracts. Some of them are brand new missions and not related to one another, while some are more or less redesigned missions from the first Hitman game. Game mechanics employ the same well-proven gameplay formula from the previous installments in the series. Each of the 12 long missions features several objectives that can be completed in many different ways. Moreover, the game is darker and more brutal than its predecessors thanks to an interesting story and some audiovisual tricks.

Another installment in the soccer series developed by a Tokyo-based branch of Konami. The game introduces many novelties, the most prominent one being the International Challenge mode, which is an equivalent to the World Cup championship. Moreover, the players are given licensed national teams (including Netherlands, England, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) as well as league clubs (featuring Bayern Munchen and Manchester United). In comparison to the previous installments, the gameplay mechanics of Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 remain unaltered, however, the developers have implemented some novelties into the game’s formula – the game is more dynamic and features fewer interruptions by the referee’s whistle. The free kick mechanism allows the players to quickly perform set pieces. The whole experience is well-accompanied by additional animations, improved textures, and well-developed soccer player models. The single player career is complemented by the multiplayer mode.

A major expansion for the third installment in the cult RPG series Mass Effect, created by BioWare. Action of the DLC takes places during the war and concentrates on the eponymous mythical creature, known as the Leviathan of Dis, supposedly able to destroy a Reaper. Such powerful ally would be priceless in the fight against the Reapers so commander Shepard decides to verify the rumors and try to find Leviathan. In the quest-line provided by the expansion you have an occasion to explore some unknown star systems and visit four new locations, where you can, for example, operate a deep sea diving mech. You have also two new weapons at your disposal: the AT-12 Raider shotgun and the M-55 Argus assault rifle. Moreover, Mass Effect 3: Leviathan offers a new skill for commander Shepard and a lot of new lore information concerning the origin of the Reapers.

However, if you forget that seasons in this title change, you might face famine. You have to strike a balance between the satisfaction of the inhabitants and the tax rates you impose on them. The objective is to defend your city from Viking raids and dragons attacks. To survive, you need to build castles with defensive walls and watchtowers.

Once again, we lead a caravan of brave warriors who, in the face of the impending end of the world, have to defeat evil once and for all. When it comes to gameplay mechanics, not much has changed. The game is still a turn-based strategy with RPG elements. We will meet many NPCs, some of them will join us, and some will give us various quests to do. In combat, we lead a group of heroes who have different abilities and equipment. We can set up a camp to level up our warriors and equip them with better items between the battles. The Banner Saga 3 has a bit more darker, hand drawn 2D visuals that bring to mind Disney animated movies.

Another installment in the popular third person perspective action series with RPG elements. Since the third game of the series, the franchise is being developed mostly on Nintendo handhelds. Similarly to its predecessors, Monster Hunter X was published by the Capcom company and developed under the supervision of Yasunori Ichinose – the director of the previous portable installments of the series. The game mechanics haven’t changed much, allowing the player to travel through a fantasy world and complete various missions that focus mostly on fighting monsters. A mountain village called Beruna is the player’s base of operations, but during the journey, the player will also find locations known from other Monster Hunter games. Worth mentioning, among the novelties added in the game, are four unique movement sets that are the equivalent of Skill Ranks from Monster Hunter Frontier G8. This system is supplemented by Hunting Techniques based on finishers from Monster Hunter Online.

The third main installment in the popular FPS series, Call of Duty. It is also the first game in the franchise (not counting the console spin-offs) that in the end was not released on PCs. In contrast to the previous installments, this time the game was developed by Treyarch – the authors of the console version of Call of Duty 2. The plot of the game once again takes place on various fronts of World War II. This time one can play as American, British, Canadian, and Polish soldiers. The game mechanics remained almost unchanged in comparison to the previous games. However, there are several novelties. The developers implemented parachute drops and gave complete control over vehicles and boats to the player. Interactions with the surrounding were greatly improved. Overall realism has been improved – bullets behave different depending on what type of material they hit. Multiplayer mode was enhanced as well – now players can play in different roles and communicate using special commands.

What’s interesting, the armor our avatar wears affects his mobility — for example, a light armor provides less protection from damage but lets us perform fast dodges. The production was designed solely with multiplayer mode in mind and is powered by Unreal Engine 4 which provides high-quality graphics.

The third entry in the ground-breaking real-time strategy game series, this time calling back to the very first game from 1995. The game itself, however, takes us to the beginning of 21st century and once again puts us in charge of the weakened Nod Brotherhood or GDI alliance that tries to maintain the world peace under the command of General Salomon. Despite what we could have thought, the charismatic leader of Nod did not die under the ruins of his temple and is quick to begin a new conflict, which can change the world forever. Gameplay of Tiberian Sun doesn’t differ much from the original, though the creators from Westood studio made sure to implement some changes and novelties. Each faction has new buildings and units that force us to develop new tactics. There also additions like new, three-dimensional game engine, improved cutscenes with well-known actors (including James Earl Jones and Michael Biehn) and enhanced multiplayer for up to 8 players.

The expansion features a new nonlinear story campaign, consisting of about 20 hours of gameplay. Your can have three new companions in your party, encounter previously unseen monsters, and discover unknown locations, e.g. the dark underground sewers.

An action game set in the universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The game shows a vision of the aforementioned universe inspired by the movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. Developed by Pandemic Studios, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest allows the player to participate in a number of battles determining the fate of Middle Earth. One can side with the forces of good and fight side by side with the characters from the books and movies, or join Sauron as he conquers consecutive territories and enslaves the peoples of Middle Earth. The gameplay mechanics have been based on the formula featured in the first two installments of the Star Wars: Battlefront series. During the battles, one controls standard units diversified in terms of their specialties - the players can become warriors, archers, scouts, or mages. Occasionally, one can also assume the role of giants and characters known from the movie adaptations. The two available single-player campaigns (one per each faction of the conflict) have been divided into several diverse missions - the multiplayer experience, however, features three game modes – Skirmish, Conquest, and Capture the Ring. The game delivers high-quality visuals - the player is bound to appreciate the character models highly resembling the actors who starred in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

Another installment in the Need for Speed racing game series. This time, the game brings an unexpected twist, for a typically arcade series turns towards realism. The new developer, by the name of Slightly Mad Studios, created new driving physics that focus on simulation rather than arcade gameplay. Similar to 2007's ProStreet, races take place on closed racing circuits. The player can participate in the entire season of races, taking place both on fictional and real circuits. The game offers a wide set of licensed cars, bringing the interior view back to the series. As a result, the experience is intensified and the realism is felt. The visuals were improved as usual, but apart from that, new collision and damages models were implemented and the AI algorithms were improved. Opponents behave more aggressively behind the wheel - they experiment with different methods of passing other drivers.

The second entry in the series of third-person perspective action games about Spider-Man. The plot of the game is based on the movie under the same title. The player assumes the role of Peter Parker, a boy who gained spider superpowers during an accident in a laboratory. His main antagonist is Otto Octavius (in the criminal underworld known as Doctor Octopus), a scientist equipped with mechanical arms controlled by his brainwaves. Depending on the platform, the game has completely different mechanics and was developed by different studios. The main console version offers a fully three-dimensional open world with advanced physics and takes place in a faithfully recreated virtual version of Manhattan. Other versions have simplified mechanics that use features of side-scrolling action games and platform games.

A multiplayer first-person shooter developed by Blizzard and the first production of this genre in the portfolio of the creators of cult series such as Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft. The game is set in a future where peace is ensured by the eponymous organization, established decades ago for protection against attacks by renegade robots. When it starts to crumble, torn apart by internal conflicts, its responsibilities are taken over by completely new characters whose roles are assumed by the players. The game focuses on multiplayer team duels which reward performing certain tasks instead of eliminating other characters. A wide array of heroes with different abilities is involved in the combat and, depending on the situation, we can switch our hero several times during one fight. The game does not offer any development of characters' skills and equipment, instead the key to victory are the skills of the players and good teamwork.
