Slitherine / Matrix Games is a developer and publisher.
Companies involved in publishing and producing video games, belonging (together with AGEod) to the Slitherine Group consortium – the world's largest company specializing in creating and publishing digital wargames and strategy games. Both entities operate independently, and titles bearing their logos can be found on various platforms – from PC, through consoles, to mobile devices.
Matrix Games was created first. The New York-based company was founded in 1999 by David Heath. Slitherine (whose full name is Slitherine Software UK Limited) was founded on June 25, 2000.
Over the years, both studios have grown in strength, creating and releasing their own productions, as well as publishing games of other developers. Among the published games, the most prominent were complex wargames (usually turn-based, although there were exceptions). Many of them were created in collaboration with military experts, as well as with various licensing partners, such as History, Military History, Games Workshop, Horrible Histories, Showtime, BBC and Buzz Aldrin Enterprises.
Matrix Games quickly began prioritizing digital distribution, which allowed the company to minimize publishing costs and successfully operate within niche genres. Slitherine eventually became known for developing professional military simulations, such as a special version of Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations.
In May 2010, after negotiations lasting since October, the two companies merged. Their combined portfolio at that time included approximately 150 titles. In 2012, the Slitherine Group, which they founded, acquired a third entity – AGEod studio. Two years later, the American Shenandoah Studio joined Slitherine Group. Fans had to wait until 2024 for their next significant venture, when Matrix Games announced the acquisition of the Battlefront team – creators of the Combat Mission series.
